January 8, 2016

Science: (Mrs. Gorham) – Next week the students will continue to prepare for the Science MidYear. (Jan 20th)  Chemistry review questions are due on Tuesday and Density review Questions are due on Thursday.

Social Studies: (Mr. Nelson) – The Social Studies Mid-Year exam that will cover chapters 11, 12, and 14-1,  will be on Monday, January 11th. After the exam, we will continue on learning about medieval Japan.

Math: (Ms. Mantia) – The math exam is scheduled for Friday, January 15th.  Extra help is after school on Wednesday, January 13th.  Each student received a topic list prior to vacation.  Students also received an exam practice packet this week.  The practice packet includes a schedule for work completion along with several practice worksheets to prepare for the exam.  The exam covers material from the first three chapters in the textbook along with the unit on geometry.

ELA: (Mrs. Kotarakos) – Next week we will begin the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. Students will receive the first vocabulary list for this unit on Monday.  In grammar, we will start a new unit on pronouns.  Finally, all students should be reading their book report book.    Guidelines and a rubric will be handed out in class next week.  

Italian: (Mrs. Pescatore) – Students will begin Chapter 6, The Environment. They will learn how to talk about the various weather conditions for the four seasons. Their first quiz will be on the seasons (page 145) and the weather expressions (page 146).

Spanish: (Ms. Mirabella) – Next week, students will be wrapping up with stem changing/”boot” verbs. After, they will be introduced to three new verbs, which will allow them to express what they like, what they are interested in, and what bores them. Extra help with any of these grammatical concepts will be available after school on Tuesday and Thursday!

Spanish: (Sra. Abrams) – Spanish students will be finishing vocabulary from Palabras 2 in Chapter 7 with a quiz and then begin studying stem-changing verbs.

Spanish: (Señora Barkley) – Students will be learning about Stem Changing (“Boot”) verbs. Plan for a quiz at the end of the week.

Health: (Mrs. Fay) –  Students will be beginning the unit on mental health.  Students will be using walkinourshoes.org as well as lessons from the National Institutes of Health to examine what mental illness is, the biology of mental illness, and the impact of stigma on those experiencing a mental health issue.

ELA: (Mrs. Bergeron)- Now that the mid-year exam is behind us, we will begin our next unit on Twelve Angry Men.  Students will learn about the judicial system and even get to participate in a mock trial before reading the play.  Students are asked to have a new independent reading book by next Friday.

Science:  (Mr. Marino) – Next week students will be taking the open response part of the mid term exam. Students should be studying every night for 25-35 min. They have flash cards with a rating system of how well they know the words, and a review packet that features questions that should be written out and handed in by January 20th.

Math:  (Mr. Peterson) –   This week, students finished section 4.3 (graphing using the intercepts method) and had a quiz on sections 4.2-4.3.   Following the quiz, we began our math mid-year review by reviewing chapter 1.  Next week, we will continue our review with chapter 2, chapter 3, and geometry.  The math mid-year is on Friday, January 15th.

Social Studies: (Mrs. DiSipio) – The Social Studies Assessment will be given this Monday, January 11th. Students were given a study guide before vacation and we spent the week reviewing for the exam.  Students should have a practice map, as well as, all highlighted vocabulary terms and concepts. Today in class students reviewed for their essay.

ELA:  (Mrs. Nelson-Boyd) – Next week we will continue to read and discuss the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.  We will also begin a new grammar unit on pronouns.

Social Studies: (Mrs. Volpe)- Social studies Mid-year exam will be on January 11, 2016. Students should review their notes and study guides on chapters 11, 12 and 14.  

Math:  (Mrs. Wilkes) – The math mid-year exam will be given on Friday, January 15, 2016.  Students should be reviewing all material covered in Chapters 1 – 3.  All study sheets completed in class since the break as well as homework provides excellent review for all students.

Science:  (Mr. Hickman) –  Next week, students will continue their review of matter, chemistry and density in preparation for the physical science mid-year assessment.  The open-response portion of the test will be held on Wednesday, January 13th, and the objective sections of the test will given on Wednesday, January 20th.

French:  (Mme Pescatore) – French students will have a Lesson 18 quiz on Wednesday, January 18, covering articles and negative sentences. Later on in the week, we will study more about adjectives in Lesson 19.

Latin:  (Mr. Finnigan) – Next week, students will continue to practice using the endings of the first and second declensions both orally and through composition exercises, proceeding through Chapter 2 of Lingua Latina. Due to mid-year assessments in core classes, the noun-adjective agreement and 2-1-2 adjectives quest has been moved to Wednesday, 1/13. There will be a quiz on the geography of the Roman Empire on Thursday, 1/14.
