Several students from the Marshall Simonds Middle school were among the nearly 150,000 students worldwide to participate this year in the Math Olympiad program. They participated in a series of five monthly contests of 5 problems each, from November to March, and weekly practice sessions under the supervision and coaching of Neeti  Bharathan and Jane Lynch. They taught the students to solve unusual and difficult problems and to think creatively. Neeti started the program and Jane took over in January.

The students responded well and were recognized with certificates for their participation.  The silver pin is awarded to the students in the top 10%. The top 10% winners were Daniel Nguyen, Amit Shenot, Neev Maru, Anthony Minichiello, Rushil Patel and Rohan Varma. These fine mathletes will be participating in a  Middlesex Math Madness Tournament at the Memorial school on May 14th. This is the third annual  tournament and Marshall Simonds 6th graders have been victorious in their past showings.

Each year the Math Olympiads serves more than 100,000 students on nearly 5000 teams nationally and about 50,000 students on 1000 teams in more than 30 other countries. Since 1979 , it has provided thought-provoking problems that stretch the abilities of students in grades 4-8, strengthening their  foundations for both assessment tests and more advanced studies. Our students  have responded to the challenge with eagerness and enthusiasm .

Well done sixth  grade Math Olympiads!
