7th Graders use PNC Christmas Price Index to Assess Consumer Goods Pricing

The PNC Christmas Price Index began over 30 years ago as a way to engage investment clients and it has become a popular and anticipated economic report.  7th grade BEAMers are studying the holiday spending trends using activities furnished by The Stock Market Game (Sifma Foundation).  CPI data has been kept since 1985 and students worked in their investment groups to calculate the percentage of change from 2015 to 2016 with regard to purchasing all the items mentioned in the 12 Days of Christmas song…from the partridge in the pear tree to the Lords a’leaping.

The importance of the exercise measures the change in prices and goods and services reflecting the spending habits of the “average” American.  The CPI includes goods and services such as food, housing, clothing and utilities.  The yearly percentage change is widely used as a measure of inflation.  BEAMers are examining the impact of the costs of…
