Dear Parents,

On Wednesday, November 15th at 7:00pm the middle school PTO and the Burlington Education Foundation will sponsor the showing of the movie “Screenagers”.  The movie dives deeply into how technology impacts students development and the challenges of parenting in the digital world.  Following the movie a panel of educators will respond to questions.  All parents of students in the Burlington Public Schools are invited to this free presentation in the MSMS auditorium.

Reminder: Students need a note from home to take a different bus. We can only put three extra students on any bus.  No additional students on Buses # 5 and 12, they are full.

Science: (Mrs. Gorham) – Next week students will learn about the phases of matter and conservation of mass. There will be a test on Friday for the first portion of the Matter unit. We will do a full review on Thursday in class. The study guide will go home on Wednesday. A new Jognog will also be posted.

Math: (Miss Mantia) –  Students will learn how to solve equations involving multi-steps, like terms, and distributive property.  Students will also learn how to write and solve equations that model real-world situations.  Examples include buying a fixed amount and variable amount of items as well as determining how many types of tickets were sold for an event.

Social Studies: (Mr. Nelson) – This week in social studies we took the chapter 11 test and began the next topic, ancient China! Next week, we will dive into how China reunited after years of war.

ELA: (Ms. Chau) – Students will be starting their Hair Raising Tales Unit on Monday where we’ll be reading stories including “Sorry, Right Number” and “Sleepy Hollow.” For grammar, we will start on our unit on Verbs. We moved the date of the Grammar Test to Monday (Oct. 16) and students are aware that they have a Vocabulary Quiz on Wednesday (10/18).  

Italian: (Mrs. Pescatore) – Students will complete their study of the possessive adjectives with a quiz on Thursday, October 18th. Then we will begin Chapter 5, La Casa {The House}.

Spanish: (Ms. Mirabella) – Next week, students will take a quiz on conjugating regular and irregular verbs from 7th grade on Wednesday, 10/18. Then, we will review how to tell time in Spanish. Finally, students will begin their unit on the verbs Ser and Estar and their uses/conjugations.

Spanish: (Sra. Abrams) –  After oral interviews at the beginning of the week, Spanish students will studying vocabulary of the family (Palabras 1) in Chapter 6.

Spanish: (Señora Barkley) – We are working on Chapter 6 Vocabulary this week.

Health: (Mrs. Fay) –   After completing their personal health inventory, students will begin a unit on the dangers and benefits of living online.  Students will use a digital “ethical compass” to analyze a variety of situations.

ELA: (Mr. Balsamo) – This week in ELA, we reviewed Vocab Unit 2 pt. 1, the first ten Lit. Terms, and read “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Monkey’s Paw”. We will have a quiz on the covered material next Wednesday. In addition, the Banned Book Project will be due on Oct. 20.

Science: (Follow @MrMarinoScience) – Next week students will work on understanding the difference between covalent and ionic bonds. We will create two dimensional models representing the matter that makes up molecules. Please send your child to school with any LEGOs you wish to donate to the Robotics Team. Thanks!

Social Studies: (Mrs. DiSipio) –  Students will be taking the Chapter 11 Test on Tuesday, October 17th.  A study guide was given out this week and we started reviewing today.  Any student that would like to stay after for review on Monday is more than welcome.  Students should review their vocabulary and presentation notes, as well as, their previous quizzes from Chapter 11.  

Math: (Mr. Peterson) – This week, students worked on section 1.2 (multi-step equations).  Next week, we will work on section 1.3 (equations with variables on both sides), and we will have a quiz on 1.2 and 1.3.

Science: (Ms. Byrne) –  The Matter Unit Test will be on Monday 10/16/17. We will be starting our unit on atoms and the Periodic Table of Elements next week.  New JogNog assignment has been posted.

Social Studies: (Mrs. Volpe) –  Next week we will focus on Chinese Society. Students will learn how the Tang dynasty strengthened their economy by supporting farming and trade. Quiz on Friday.

Math: (Mrs. Wilkes) – We are continuing our study of Chapter 1 (Equations) in our new Big Ideas Math textbook.  The technology that comes with this has proven to be quite helpful in class, enhancing student learning and maximizing the time.  Students will be tested next week on Chapter 1.

ELA: (Mrs. Nelson-Boyd) – Next week students will draft their independent reading book analysis.  Novels need to be read by Monday and brought into class.  We will also begin a new grammar unit on nouns next week.

French: (Mme Pescatore) – Students have been learning the the irregular verb faire {to make or to do} and how it is used in some idiomatic expressions {page 124}. There will be a quiz on Monday, October 16th. Then we will be finishing Lesson 16 in preparation for a lesson quiz.
