Dear Grade 8 Parents,

Today the students received their second quarter midterm.  As always if you have any concerns please contact the teacher, guidance counselor or myself.  Next week study guides will be sent home in preparation for second semester assessment exams.  The following schedule has been set for all the exams.

During the month of January the students will begin their official transition preparation for the high school.  All eighth grade students will take a Naviance test to better assist the BHS guidance department in helping students plan academic, career and college choices. 

As parents you will be notified of the upcoming BHS meetings with the 2018 Freshman parents and procedures for course selection and individual grade eight guidance transition meetings at MSMS.  Be assured we will take good care of each student to have a smooth, successful transition to BHS, Shawsheen Tech or a private high school.

The next PTO meeting will be January 24, 2018 at 6:45 p.m.

Science: (Mrs. Gorham) – This week, the students received their Midyear review packets (Friday 12/15) Their weekend HW was to complete flashcards for all vocabulary. All Midyear due dates are on student packets. (Matter and Chemistry due 1/2/18 and Density due 1/4/18)

Next week we will be completing a lab on Density of Liquids. Liquids are due on Monday. Lab/Glogster reports will be due on Thursday.

Social Studies: (Mr. Nelson) – This week in social studies students concluded the first section of Japan with a quiz and we began section 2 “Shoguns and Samurai”. Next week we will continue section 2 and quiz towards the end of the week. I will also be handing a mid-term study guide out to students on Friday so they will be able to work on it over the vacation.

Math: (Ms. Mantia) – There will be a Chapter 2 geometry test on Monday.  Students received a study guide in class on Friday.  Reminder that tests look very similar to study guides and students are encouraged to make sure they understand each question on a study guide.

ELA: (Ms. Chau) – This week, the students were given their Midyear Reviews for ELA this Tue (Dec.12) and they have until Jan. 2 to pass it in. They will have a Literature Test next week on Dec. 20th. Also, students should be doing their independent reading at home for their upcoming book reports. There will be two check-in dates for their book report notes on Dec. 22 and Jan.18 just to see how they are progressing on this assignment. For next week, we’ll try to cover Ch.7 of ROTHMC before their break.  As for grammar, we’ll be focusing on punctuations (semicolons, commas, and quotations).

Italian: (Mrs. Pescatore) – Students will complete activities using ordinal numbers and will have a quiz on the topic on Wednesday, December 20th. Then they will be learning about holiday customs in Italy. Buone vacanze!

Spanish: (Ms. Mirabella) – Next week, students will be working on two essays to add to their autobiography projects about their families and homes. They will also watch two cultural films about how the holidays are celebrated in Mexico from December 16th to February 2nd, and discuss similarities and differences to how holidays are celebrated here in the United States.

Spanish: (Sra. Abrams) – Spanish students will watch “Sweet 15”, a movie about a quinceañera and immigration issues. We will also discuss holiday traditions of Spanish speaking countries.

Spanish: (Señora Barkley) – We will be reviewing Chapter 6 for the Test this week.

Health: (Mrs. Fay) – Students will be trying out some stress reduction techniques and learning about a variety of stress reduction strategies.  Our next unit will be on mental health.

ELA: (Mr. Balsamo) – This week in ELA, we completed Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry (the last ROT, HMC test will be next Wed.) and discussed the Midyear Assessment (the review packet will be due on Jan. 4.) Roll of Thunder essays will be returned by next Fri. – final revisions will be due on Jan. 4.

Science: (Follow @MrMarinoScience) – As we wrap up 2017 we will prepare for the mid-year exam that will be given Jan.8th. Students will be making a variety of projects that help them recall what we have learned since late Aug. 🙂

Social Studies: (Mrs. DiSipio) –  This week we began our study of medieval Japan.  We have read about the geography of Japan, its early peoples, China’s early influences on the country, and the origin of the religion of Shinto.  Students will have a quiz next Thursday on Chapter 14, Section 1.  They should review their presentation and vocabulary notes to help them prepare.  

Math: (Mr. Peterson) –    This week, students worked on section 4.2 (slope) in the textbook.  Next week, we will finish slope, and we will have a test on this important topic.

Latin: (Mr. Walsh) – Latin students will be continuing to study chapter 5, learning about the Roman house, with a brief intermission to discuss Saturnalia, the Roman winter festival.

Health: (Mrs. Fay) – Students will be trying out some stress reduction techniques and learning about a variety of stress reduction strategies.  Our next unit will be on mental health.

Science: (Ms. Byrne) –  This week we exploring the relationship between density and buoyancy for both liquids and solids.  We are starting our Tower of Density Project near the end of the week, going into next week.  We will have our Density Test on Thursday 12/21/17.

Social Studies: (Mrs. Volpe) – Next week we will be finishing our studies on Japan and we will be having a chapter test on Thursday.   

Math: (Mrs. Wilkes) – Students will be tested next week over graphing linear equations by using x-y tables and by using x and y intercepts.

ELA: (Mrs. Nelson-Boyd) – Students have received their study guide for the midyear assessment.  

On Thursday students will be tested on Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry chapters 1-6.  Students should use chapter activities, chapter summaries, and chapter review questions to better prepare for the test.  Again, it is extremely important that students keep up with the assigned reading so that they can participate in class discussions and activities based on the chapter readings.

French: (Mme Pescatore) – Students will learn about holiday customs in France and will watch a video in French with English subtitles. Bonnes vacances!
