Dear Parents,

Grade 8 Parent Orientation at BHS – All grade 8 parents are invited to Burlington High Schools annual orientation for the parents of 8th grade students on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 from 6:00 pm to 8:00pm in the Fogelberg Performing Arts Center at Burlington High School.  School policies, procedures and curriculum as well as course selection information will be covered.

February School Vacation week: February 19-23

The New England Patriot spirit is strong here today at the middle school all in red,white and blue as students gear up for the big game! Go Patriots!!!

Math: (Miss Mantia) – Students will continue their work with slope.  Students with learn how to identify the slope of a line using both a graph and two ordered pairs.  Students will also learn the four main types of slope: positive, negative, zero, and undefined.  We will discuss how slope represents a real world rate of change such as pay per hour.  There will be a quiz on Friday.

Science: (Mrs. Gorham)– Next week the students will continue their house projects by turning them into a lab report. The lab report will be due on Friday. We will continue to discuss conduction, convection and radiation. We continue to work on Jognog.

Social Studies: (Mr. Nelson) – This week in social studies we began learning about medieval Europe! Chapter 15 focuses on topics such as the black plague, the crusades, the battle of Tours, and Feudalism. Next week we will continue section 1, and have a quiz later in the week.

ELA: (Ms. Chau) – This week, the students are finishing up their oral presentations of their book reports. After this, we will start reading the Twelve Angry Men Acts I and II. We will also resume our grammar unit on pronouns exceptions and antecedents.

Italian: (Mrs. Pescatore) – Students will be able to tell how they are feeling using health expressions on pages 152 and 153. They will also be learning some idiomatic expressions using three irregular verbs on pages 153 and 154.

Spanish: (Ms. Mirabella) – Next week, students will be reviewing vocabulary, grammar, and culture from Chapter 7 in preparation for an upcoming exam. The Chapter 7 Test will be given on Thursday, 2/8. Following the test, students will explore new vocabulary in Chapter 8 about feeling, minor illnesses, and visiting the doctor’s office.

Spanish: (Sra. Abrams) –  Spanish students will be reviewing all stem-change verbs learned during Chapter 7 (e to ie, o to ue, u to ue).

Spanish: (Señora Barkley) – We will begin working on GUSTAR VERBS and our Term 3 Project.

Health: (Mrs. Fay) –  Students are finishing up the unit on mental health by discussing the warning signs of suicide.  Our next unit will be about the dangers of alcohol use.

Health: (Ms. Eovine) – Students will continue the unit on harmful substances.  The focus will be on alcohols path in the body, the laws around drinking and driving, and resources and  support for families dealing with substance abuse.

ELA: (Mr. Balsamo) – This week, we finished Act II and III of 12 Angry Men and prepared for Monday’s test on all three acts and the second group of vocabulary words associated with the play.

Social Studies: (Mrs. DiSipio) – Next week, we will begin our study of medieval Europe.  We will focus on the creation of new kingdoms and the influence of the Catholic Church in medieval Europe.  Students will have a map activity and vocabulary work throughout the week.  A quiz should be expected at the end of the week.  

Science: (@MrMrMarino) –  Students have been graphing a storm recently. Graphing time and temperature has been a big hit this week and next week we will conduct a special experiment where we get to cook something with a heat lamp! 🙂  

Math: (Mr. Peterson) –  This week, students finished section 5.2(the substitution method to solve systems).  Next week, we will work on section 5.3 (the elimination/combination method to solve systems of equations).

Italian: (Mrs. Pescatore) –  Students will be able to tell how they are feeling using health expressions on pages 152 and 153. They will also be learning some idiomatic expressions using three irregular verbs on pages 153 and 154.

French: (Mme Abrams) – Next week, French students will be finishing the concept of “C’est vs. Il est” and all of Lesson 20 with a lesson quiz.

Latin: (Mr. Walsh) – Latin students will be continuing to study the grammar found in chapter 6, namely prepositions, the passive voice, and specific uses of the ablative case without prepositions.

Health: (Mrs. Fay) – Students are finishing up the unit on mental health by discussing the warning signs of suicide.  Our next unit will be about the dangers of alcohol use.

Science: (Ms. Byrne) – This week we explored the 3 methods of heat transfer:  convection, conduction and radiation, in addition to a lab on the relationship between mass and thermal energy.  On Friday, students were assigned partners and directions/rubric for their Home Insulation Project which will be conducted primarily in class for the first half of next week.  Students are required to bring in materials from home on Monday for this project.

Social Studies: (Mrs. Volpe) –  Next week we will be working on our Poster Projects and students will be learning about European kingdoms and the Crusades.

Math: (Mrs. Wilkes) – Next week we will continue our study of solvings systems of linear equations.  Students have learned how to solve using the graphing method and the substitution method.  They will also learn the elimination method.

ELA: (Mrs. Nelson-Boyd) – Next week students will be introduced to William Shakespeare!  Classes will learn about his background, his various works, and get the opportunity to write some of their own sonnets.  

French: (Mme Pescatore) – Students will learn how to express he/she is using il/elle est or c’est. Their quiz will be on Friday, February 9th.
