LANGUAGE ARTS: (Mrs. Hewitt A-2) I finished grading the My Neighborhood narrative essays. I am impressed with the use of sensory details. We did several edits in class, and they kept getting better and better. I wish we had time to do even one more edit after my final feedback. We started our Nouns Unit; it is small, with only three sections. Expect a test early next week. Remember Book Reports are due next Thursday, December 18. The paragraph must follow the final draft format, and be in a certain order. Include key words such as: character, personality traits, beginning, middle, end, conflict, etc. The format is posted in Google Classroom.

Reading: (A-2)   We continue to do vocabulary exercises. We should finish the novel before break, and start the second.

MATH: (Mrs. Crowley A-3)We have finally finished with chapter 2 in the textbook, and we are now going to move on to Chapter 4. Chapter 4 starts with prime and composite numbers, then moves on to factors, equivalent fractions, simplifying fractions, GCF (Greatest Common Factors) and multiples. This chapter will take a while to complete, but it deals with number sense, which is an integral part of this year in Math. In addition to learning the basic elements of these topics, we will spend time discovering how these topics can help us solve real-world word problems.

Reading: (A-3) We have all finished The London Eye on Lightsail, and we are now moving on to reading groups focused on one of four different books: Star Girl by Jerry Spinelli, Brian’s Winter by Gary Paulsen, When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead, and Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper. Students are creating “thinking notes,” picking out difficult vocabulary words, and engaging in discussion in their book groups. In addition, we have been spending time with an iReady vocabulary app that supports PARCC style testing. Students have been working hard!

SOCIAL STUDIES: (Mrs. Sturtevant A-4) We have just concluded our unit on South America and have begun to work on Europe. Europe is unique as we look at the region as a whole and then divide it into sub-regions. Our first subregion will be that of Western Europe & the British Isles.  After that, we will progress to Scandinavia, Mediterranean Europe and Eastern Europe which includes the Baltics and Balkans. During our introduction to Europe, there will be an emphasis on physical features and language groups, as well as the European Union.

Reading: (A-4) Students have chosen to read Among the Imposters, the sequel to Among the Hidden, as our next novel. We are all very excited to see what adventures Luke/Lee has now that he is no longer hidden to the world. Students will continue to read for fluency and comprehension, as well as more character development. We will also do more small group work for this 2nd novel.

SCIENCE: (Mrs. Rafferty D102) We are at the end of our unit on the three heat transfer methods, which ties in to our current discussions on global and local winds. We are looking at how these winds are formed and where they occur. Students were recently tested on the heat transfer methods.

Our next topic will cover three of the Earth’s spheres (atmosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere), and the Earth’s four layers (crust, mantle, outer core, inner core).

Reading, (D102)Students are currently involved in debating current topics. They were responsible for researching pros and cons for their assigned topic and are sharing their views with the class. We will begin our next novel when they are done with these discussions.  Mrs. Gover has been helping them create Literature Circles where they are each given assigned positions regarding passages they have read from our novel.

Mrs. Gover has recently had the students work in Literature Circles. This activity gives students an opportunity to collaborate and share in-depth discussions about their readings, while engaging in critical thinking and reflection.

HEALTH: Ms. Eovine: –  Students will be working on Public Service Announcements that deal with bullying.  They will be working in small groups and have an option of using either the program ”Explain Everything”, Google Presentation”, or “imovie”.  They will present them to the class the second class meeting of the week. Students will be watching a video on types of bullying and have a bullying assessment using KAHOOT ( A Program on the iPad).
