6B Newsletter 9/3/2015

September 3, 2015

LANGUAGE ARTS: (Mr. Conley A-2) Welcome to 6B ELA! This year we will be developing reading comprehension skills, building vocabulary, improving spelling, learning grammar, and focusing on improving writing skills, and many other activities. Our first unit of study will include reading fairy tales and folktales and understanding the elements of each. It will be a busy year, but we’ll have plenty of fun along the way. Your child will be bringing home two textbooks next week  – these remain at home until the end of the year. Homework will be posted on Google Classroom each day.

Reading: (A-2) The first book we read, Holes, we’ll read together as a class. Once again, we’ll be utilizing LightSail – a highly functional e-reader that tracks students’ progress across a range of skill areas. Once we complete this first novel, students will choose their next book from several titles grouped by genre (i.e., dystopian, differently-abled, survival/adventure, etc.). LightSail enables students to read what they are interested in and to read at a pace that suits their reading abilities and style – it’s a great resource!

MATH: (Mrs. Crowley A-3)Welcome to Mathematics with Mrs. Crowley! I am very excited to work with the students this year and we have so much to do. We are working with the textbook Middle School Mathematics (Course 2) by McDougal Littell, but we will have a number of other common core aligned activities. In addition, it is very important to me that the students have a firm grasp on their multiplication facts, so please spend some time ensuring they are making progress with that. One great resource for practicing this is http://www.oswego.org/ocsd-web/games/Mathmagician/mathsmulti.html. You can also take advantage of traditional flashcards, which I have extras of. We will start with some work with basic skills before we move into Chapter 1 next week.

Reading: (A-3)Reading this year is going to be fabulous! We are starting the year reading the book Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, which is the first in a four-part series about a dystopian society. Students will be utilizing a program called LightSail that is an app with a huge library of books, but also adds a discussion and assessment element. In order to stay on the same pace, students will pick a supplementary novel of their choice that can be read when they have fulfilled the day’s assignment. The book summary can be found at the following website: http://www.shmoop.com/uglies/summary.html

SOCIAL STUDIES: (Mrs. Sturtevant A-4) Welcome back to school!  This year in Geography, we will start by studying some basic map skills and basics, and progress onward to the 5 Themes of Geography.  Students have a textbook to keep at home, as we have enough books to keep a class set here.  I assign homework each night and it needs to be completed to the best of each student’s ability. Homework is graded on completion, not correctness. I do use google classroom extensively, and will cross post homework there in addition to having it in the classroom.  Also, I maintain a website with current Geography and Team 6B information, as well as links to various websites. http://bitly.com/A4Geography The 6B info form is also linked on there under Team News.   I’m looking forward to a great year!

Reading: (A-4)This year in reading, my class will be beginning with the novel Woods Runner by Gary Paulsen.  As it takes place during the American Revolution, we will do some historical work as well as reading for comprehension and plot development.  For much of the year, students will be using a program/app called LightSail, and I’m sure your children will tell you all about it!

SCIENCE: (Mrs. Lynch D102) Welcome new students and parents. I’m looking forward to being the new science teacher on B team. This year we will be studying various aspects of our Earth.  Topography, weather, climate, rock cycles, heat transfer methods, moon phases and more. The next two weeks will be spent discussing the methods of good science observations, teamwork and skill building.  Engineering  marshmallow towers will be our first team activity. Please visit the 6B link to help us assist your child in a learning environment  suited for their needs. http://bitly.com/6Binfo

Reading, (D102) The first book we will be reading is Hoot by  Carl Hiaasen. This story deals with  the environmental issue of habitat destruction . Students will be researching the setting in this book to better understand the plot . Mrs. Gover will be assisting us with the Lightsail app/program for comprehension strategies and vocabulary based activities.

HEALTH: (Ms. Eovine) – Students will be starting the Nutrition / Wellness unit next week.  The focus this week will be on nutritious snacks, reading food labels, and using the tools on myplate.gov.  Students will be using the Chromebooks to visit myplate.gov.  They will be learning about balancing their dietary intake and using some of the games on the site.
