SOCIAL STUDIES: (Ms. Ellis A-13) Next week we will focus on the 5 Themes of Geography. These themes will help us categorize information we study throughout the year. The 5 themes are: location, place, region, movement, and human environment interaction. We will then be moving on to landforms. Students will review landforms from previous grades, and get introduced to a few new ones. Following landforms will be climate, where we will discuss the factors of climate and the characteristics of various climates found around the world.

Reading: (A-13) We will continue to read Among the Hidden.

LANGUAGE ARTS: (Mrs. Sullivan A-15) Students are in the process of writing a four paragraph narrative about their neighborhood. We are focusing on writing  good sentences and using sensory details. During the next two weeks, we will focus on cause and resolution of a conflict in a story. We will be reading the short stories, The Porcupine and the Sky Mirrors and The Fly to assist in our discussion.

Reading: (A-15) Students continue to read the novel Holes on LightSail. Students are learning how to find the main idea and details in the story by creating top down webs.

MATH: (Mrs. MacCurtain A-14) Over the next two weeks students will be finishing Chapter 1, “Number Sense Patterns and Algebraic Thinking” with area, perimeter and the distance formula. Students will be working on the Dream Room Project, which will be worth a quiz grade and there will also be a Chapter 1 Test.  If there is time we will start Chapter 2, “Decimal Operations.”

Reading (A-14) Students are still reading Among the Hidden on Lightsail. They are really enjoying the story!

SCIENCE: (Mrs. Richardson D-103) We will be “wrapping up” our unit on scientific investigation.  Students will be testing cups next week for heat loss, heat gain (utilizing thermometers and making quantitative observations). The students will be designing their own scientific investigation and applying all of the steps of the scientific method (purpose, research, experimentation, data analysis, stating conclusions and communicating results).  This will be a graded project.  An outline will go home with more details.

Reading: (D-103) We continue to read Babe and Me.  Students have also chosen a free reading novel on LightSail.

HEALTH (Ms. Eovine) – Students will be starting the G.R.E.A.T. Program.  Officer Cross (School resource Officer) will be working with me in health class for the next three weeks using the G.R.E.A.T. program.  The focus will be on how drugs, and violence can affect our communities and what we can do to create safe and substance free communities.  This week’s focus will be on communities we belong to and what we give to those communities and what we receive from being a part of one.  We will also be talking about goal setting and how to set up realistic short and long term goals.
