SOCIAL STUDIES: (Ms. Ellis A-13) Next week we will be discussing various physical features such as the archipelago, strait, isthmus, and delta. There will be a short quiz on landforms before we move on to climate. We will discuss the factors that influence climate, such as the sun, wind and landforms. World climate zones will also be studied.

Reading: (A-13) Students will continue reading Among the Hidden. We will continue working on vocabulary as well as plot and character development.

MATH: (Mrs. MacCurtain A-14) Over the next two weeks students will finish Chapter 1 with 1.5 and 1.6. They will complete a Dream Room activity to help them with area and perimeter. This will be worth a quiz grade.  Students should continue to practice XTRA Math a few times a week until they master multiplication and division.  Students will finish Chapter 1 with a big Chapter 1 test.  The test will include the following sections of the book (1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6). As of right now the Chapter 1 test is scheduled for Friday, October 10th.  After that we will start Chapter 2, “Decimal Operations.”

Reading: (A-14) Students will continue reading Freak the Mighty and another five chapter quiz will be given.

LANGUAGE ARTS: (Mrs. Sullivan A-15) Students have selected a fiction book for their first book report of the school year. Students received a Summary Organizer that they should be filling out as they read their stories. These organizers are due Friday, October 31st. Students will begin writing a four paragraph narrative about their neighborhood. We will focus on writing a good introduction and conclusion paragraph and using sensory details. We will also be learning about subjects and predicates.

Reading (A-15) Students continue to read the novel Holes. We did a Reader’s Theater in class where students took different parts (characters’ lines) from a chapter and read them aloud. There are a few different story lines that occur within in the book, and student’s are able to better understand these story lines when we pull them out and focus on them in small groups. We also have begun to focus on word roots. During the month, we will ask students to brainstorm different words that contain a word root. This activity builds vocabulary in our readers. Our first word root was port.

SCIENCE: (Mrs. Richardson D-103) The students are continuing to work on the “Parts of a lab report.”  We will be testing products from Consumer Reports.  Your child will test cups for heat loss and gain.  They will use thermometers to check quantitative observations.  Students will also apply the science skills that they’ve been learning (measuring, inferring and communicating results).  Lessons on measurement will be integrated throughout the next couple of weeks as well.

Reading: (D-103)  We continue to read, Babe and Me.  Joe and his dad are having great adventures while traveling back in time to meet the famous Babe Ruth!  The focus has been on vocabulary and summarizing as we read.  REMINDER:  Bring your own book on Fridays

 

HEALTH: Ms. Eovine Officer Cross will be working with Ms. Eovine in health class for the next three weeks.  We will be using a curriculum that deals with substance abuse, violence prevention, and communication skills.  Students will have a workbook they will be using in class to do written work in for each lesson. The first week students will be introduced to the G.R.E.A.T. curriculum and the focus will be on being part of a community and short and long term goal setting.
