SOCIAL STUDIES: (Ms. Ellis A-13) Next week we will complete our introduction to South America and begin our first country… Brazil! Other countries highlighted during this unit will be Argentina, Venezuela and Colombia. We will examine the location, climate, physical features and resources of these countries, as well as cultural information such as history, language, government and economics. We will discuss how climate, physical features and history have impacted South America as we know it today. We will also focus on how to read the textbook for information and on note taking skills during this unit.

Reading: (A-13) Students are hard at work on their Among the Hidden extension assignment. Our next book with the sequel, Among the Imposters, which follows Luke on his new journey as Lee Grant.

MATH: (Mrs. MacCurtain A-14) Students had a pop quiz today on mean, median, mode and range.  Over the next two weeks we will continue in Chapter 3, “Data and Statistics.”  Students will be learning about box-and-whisker plots, dot plots, normal distribution of data and venn diagrams.  There will be a Chapter 3 test before Thanksgiving break.  Over the next two weeks students will also be working on their Survey Project.  This will be worth a test grade and will be due before Thanksgiving break.

Reading: (A-14) Students will be watching the movie, The Mighty which is based on the book, Freak The Mighty.  If there is time, we will start reading the sequel to Freak The Mighty.  This book is called Max The Mighty.

LANGUAGE ARTS: (Sullivan A-15)  Students continue to work on their persuasive essays. Students have selected a topic, and we have discussed the use of persuasive words. Students will be researching and identifying facts that support their topic in class. We will also read the short story Dragon, Dragon and focus on the story elements found in fairy tales.

Reading (A-15) Students continue to read the story Holes in class. We continue to work on fluency, vocabulary,  and comprehension.

SCIENCE: (Mrs. Richardson D-103) The students did a great job on their lab report projects!  I learned a few things about the products tested!  Next week the students will be observing demos and learning about conduction, convection and radiation.  They will be able to understand how heat travels and how heat affects our planet.  This will lead to an introduction about the atmosphere and Earth’s layers.  As a culmination to this unit we will be doing a popcorn activity (prior to Thanksgiving break if time allows). Students will observe how heat is transferred in 3 ways while enjoying a snack.  We are sensitive to food allergies and if you have questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.

Reading: (D-103)  We continue to read, Freak the Mighty.  We are learning about Kevin and Max’s own unique qualities.  We will emphasize vocabulary throughout each chapter.


HEALTH: Ms. Eovine   Students will be continuing the second step program.  They will be learning about positive communications skills and role-playing to practice these skills.  Students will be having a quiz on “I” Messages and Active Listening skills the second class  meeting the week of November 17th.  Some classes are behind because of veterans day and teachers conferences so please have them check their agenda books for their classes test date.
