SOCIAL STUDIES: (Ms. Ellis A-13) Students have passed in their travel brochures and I am so impressed with their work! After vacation we will study southern Europe, which includes Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Greece. Students will be working on an in-class project for this region. There will be a quiz towards the end of this unit. Russia will be our next unit of study. Have a great week!

Reading: (A-13) We will be finishing up Among the Imposters after vacation, and students will work on a closing assignment.

LANGUAGE ARTS: (Sullivan A-15) After vacation, we will continue to read the novel Where the Red Fern Grows. Students will have a chapter one through ten test once we finish reading these chapters. We will also be discussing the character traits of Billy Coleman, the main character in the story, and will be writing a character analysis essay. We will focus on using text evidence and direct quotations from the novel to support our thesis statements. We continue to work with pronouns and how to properly use subject and object pronouns in our writing and speech.

Reading (A-15) Students continue to read the novel If I Had One Wish. We continue to focus on comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency.

MATH: (Mrs. MacCurtain A-14)  Happy February vacation! After vacation students will continue with fraction, decimal and percent conversions.  There will be a quiz on these topics. After that students will be learning about fraction operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing).  Students will be doing many activities to help them learn these concepts.

Reading (A-14) Students have started using a new program on their ipads called Light Sail.  They are all reading Among the Hidden by Margaret Haddix on their ipads with this program. This program is designed to help students with comprehension and vocabulary. Students will really enjoy this story!

SCIENCE: (Mrs. Richardson D-103) Following vacation we will continue our study of “Earthquakes.”  Sean Musselman from the science center will be coming in to demonstrate seismic waves and plate tectonics.  This is a fantastic presentation and is interactive for the students.  The topic of volcanoes and Earth’s moving plates will be introduced.  Have a wonderful vacation!!!

Reading: (D-103) We just began reading the novel, Hoot by Carl Hiassen.  This is an action packed story about a new boy at school named Roy Eberhardt.  Roy and a few friends find themselves in the middle of quite the adventure!
