SOCIAL STUDIES: (Ms. Ellis A-13) Next week we will continue working on map skills. Students have been practicing latitude and longitude, and have learned the “special lines” such as the Tropic of Capricorn and the Arctic Circle. There will be a map skills quiz next Fri, 9/25. Students will receive a study guide to help them review. We will be studying the 5 Themes of Geography next.

Reading: (A-13) We have begun reading Among the Hidden. Next week students will continue reading Among the Hidden and will be using LightSail on their iPads.

LANGUAGE ARTS: (Mrs. Sullivan A-15) Summer reading quizzes were returned to all students on Tuesday, September 15th. All students should also have chosen their quarter one book report book. These books should have been approved by me and should be read at home. Students will read the short stories “All Stories are Anansi’s” and “The End of the World.” We will continue identifying story elements and discussing their role in a story. We will also be learning about the four different types of sentences.

Reading: (A-15) Students are reading the novel Holes using a program called LightSail on their iPads. We are focusing on character development and story elements.

MATH: (Mrs. MacCurtain A-14) We have completed our review of previously learned topics and over the next two weeks we will continue in Chapter 1, “Number Sense, Patterns and Algebraic Thinking.” Students started the chapter with variables (1.2)  and exponents (1.3) and will then learn order of operations (1.4).  There will be a quiz on these three sections of the book.

Reading (A-14) Students have started reading Among the Hidden in LightSail on their ipads. They are enjoying the book and seem to like the app.

SCIENCE: (Mrs. Richardson D-103) We have been working on the skills of a scientist.  Students have been utilizing measuring tools such as a triple beam balance.  We will be planting pumpkin seeds so that we can track growth and introduce vocabulary such as control, variable, and experiment.  Students will be graphing data and implementing the scientific method while recording data in the research notebooks.  Your child will be taking notes/vocabulary in their binders.  A portfolio of student work will be organized in the classroom of their best work. The kids have been doing a great job working in their cooperative teams!  I’m looking forward to meeting you at Back to School Night!

Reading: (D-103) The students are off to a great start with Lightsail.  We will focus on vocabulary and summarizing what we’ve read.  

HEALTH (Ms. Eovine) – Students will be finishing the nutrition unit this week.  The focus will be on reading food labels and making healthy choices from each food group.  The second week the students will be working with myself and Officer Cross ( School resource Officer) using the G.R.E.A.T. program.  The focus the second week will be on Goal setting.
