6C Newsletter 9/3/2015

SOCIAL STUDIES: (Ms. Ellis A-13) Welcome to SS on 6C! It’s been a wonderful first week back at school. Students have received a “Geography” textbook that they should keep at home until June. We will start the year off by reviewing map skills and adding some new skills to their repertoire. We will discuss parts of a map, types of maps, symbols on maps, and practice using latitude and longitude. We will also cover special lines such as the equator, prime meridian, and international date line.

Reading: (A-13) Students will be reading Among the Hidden by Margaret Haddix. We will focus on vocabulary, comprehension, and character development.

LANGUAGE ARTS: (Mrs. Sullivan A-15) Welcome to ELA on team 6C! Students have had a great first week. Students will have their summer reading quiz Wednesday, September 9th. Students will be able to use their notes that they took this summer to assist them on the quiz.  Students also received a Literature textbook which they are to keep at home until the end of the school year. We will start the school year reading myths and folktales from different parts of the world. We will use these stories to discuss story elements. We will also be focusing on how to write complete sentences.

Reading: (A-15) Students will begin the book Holes by Louis Sachar. In class we will focus on fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.

MATH: (Mrs. MacCurtain A-14) Welcome to Math on team 6C! I have enjoyed meeting our new team and getting to know your children. You should have received our team letter and math letter that outlines important information about my class. As a reminder, my blog is maccurtainmath.wordpress.com and the team blog is http://team6cmsms.wordpress.com.  Over the next couple of weeks we will be reviewing multiplication, division, place value and other previously learned math topics.

Reading (A-14) Students will begin the book Among the Hidden by Margaret Haddix. In class we will also work on fluency, vocabulary and and comprehension.  

SCIENCE: (Mrs. Richardson D-103) Welcome to MSMS!  Your child will start off the year learning about scientific inquiry.  Students will explore, investigate and engage in team building activities.  A few of the science skills that we will learn are hypothesizing, observing, predicting, and analyzing.  The students will be placed in small teams and assigned a lab station.  Your child will have study buddies in order to help if he/she is absent and has a missed assignment.  I’m looking forward to a great year in 6C Science!  

Reading: (D-103) We will start off the year reading Babe and Me by Dan Gutman.  Did Babe call his shot?  Joe Stoshack is going to find out..even if that means going back in time 70 years!  A great read for the start of the year!

HEALTH (Ms. Eovine) – Students will be starting the Nutrition / Wellness unit next week.  The focus this week will be on nutritious snacks, reading food labels, and using the tools on myplate.gov.  Students will be using the Chromebooks to visit myplate.gov.  They will be learning about balancing their dietary intake and using some of the games on the site.
