Grade 7 Newsletters 10/17/14

October 17, 2014

Science: (Mrs. Pratt) – Students are learning about biological classification, section 1.4 in the textbook.  We are learning the reasons why classification is important and necessary to understand more about living things.  Students are practicing using dichotomous keys (shark classification).  A quiz on Classification is planned for Tuesday, 10/21.  Next, we will be learning about microscopes and The Cell!

Math: (Mrs. Forrest)- Students are wrapping up their unit on integers with a test on Monday, October 20.  The test will include material from Chapters 2.1 – 2.5.  Reviews were done in class on Thursday and Friday.  Students will then investigate the number properties: commutative, associative, and distributive.  Finally, they will begin working  on writing and solving one-step and two-step equations.  Students will work on open response problem solving as well.

Language Arts:  (Mrs. Kotarakos) –   Students have completed their first book report and will be choosing the next book by October 29th.  The genre is mystery and adventure.   All classes will visit the school library on Monday, October 20th to select book report books if necessary.  Students will receive guidelines for the report next week.  In grammar, the focus will continue to be on verbs including action verbs, transitive and intransitive verbs, linking verbs and indirect objects.   In literature, there will be a test on Friday, October 24th.  The test will focus on the 4 short stories students have read and discussed in class.  Finally, the next vocabulary quiz will be on Tuesday, October 28th.    REMINDER: Field trip money must be in by 10/31/14.

Social Studies: (Mrs. O’Connell) – We are beginning our study of ancient Egypt. An ancient Egyptian one-page newspaper project has been assigned that is due on Thursday, October 27. Students will download a newspaper template on which they will type their newspaper articles. They must choose three topics related to ancient Egypt, research these topics, and write a newspaper article for each one. Two days of classes have been dedicated to instruction in the use of EasyBib which will be required to complete a works cited page for this project. This project MUST be done using a computer.  I have advised students to complete their projects in enough time to avoid computer/printers problems that could result in a grade reduction due to late submissions. Directions have been given in class (paper copy) and can also be accessed on my blog. On Monday, October 20, a quiz on Chapter 2, Section 1 will be given. Also, notes on Topic 1 for the project will be due on Monday, October 20.

 

Spanish: (Ms. Mirabella) –  Next week, students will be introduced to Chapter 1 in their textbooks, ¡Buen Viaje! They will start learning and becoming familiar with Words 1/Palabras 1 in their text on pages 14 and 15. By the end of the week, students will review these words by playing a game. On Monday, 10/27, students in 7A, 7B, and 7C will take a Words 1/Palabras 1 quiz (pgs. 14-15). For the remainder of the week, students will learn about The Day of the Dead/El Día de Los Muertos and read a Mexican legend about “La Llorona.”

Spanish (Sra. Abrams) –  After completing study of vocabulary from Chapter 1 Palabras 1 with a quiz, students will start Palabras 2 that includes higher numbers and additional adjective vocabulary.

Spanish: (Mrs. Barkley) – Students are continuing to use their Chapter 1 vocabulary as well as definite and indefinite articles. Next week they will be introduced to pronouns and their first verb SER (to be). They will also begin their “Quien Soy” (Who am I?) project.

Italian: – (Signora Pescatore) – Students will be finishing activities in Chapter 1 by expressing dates for various holidays. After a quiz on dates, we will begin Chapter 2, Personal Identity, and will learn some adjectives to use when describing physical characteristics of people.

Health: – (Mrs. Fay) –  Students, in groups, will be analyzing a case of cyberbullying and presenting it to the class. We will be focusing on those who witness bullying and their opportunities to take action to stop it.

Science: (Ms. Cerretani):  During the next two weeks we will be starting our unit on the cell.  We will begin with cell structure by comparing and organizing cells.  Students will know the different components of a cell and the function of each part.  We have been working with microscopes this past week getting familiar with them and learning the different parts.  We will be looking at different types of cells through the microscopes.

Math: (Mr. Vitale) – During the next two weeks we will be continuing with our work with variable equations and expressions. In particular we will be solving two-step equations, (equations that require two inverse operations to solve), and simplifying variable expressions by combining like terms and using the distributive property.

Language Arts: – (Ms. D’Arcangelo) –  Students have completed their first book report and will be choosing the next book by October 29th.  The genre is mystery and adventure.   All classes will have an upcoming visit to the library to select book report books if necessary.  Students will receive guidelines for the report next week.  In grammar, the focus will continue to be on verbs including action verbs, transitive and intransitive verbs, linking verbs and indirect objects.   In literature, we are reading and discussing a collection of four short stories.  Finally, the next vocabulary quiz will be on Tuesday, October 21st.    REMINDER: Field trip money must be in by 10/31/14.

Social Studies: (Mr. Kingston) – We’ve finished up our unit on ancient Mesopotamia and our moving a little bit south to the kingdom of ancient Egypt for our next unit.(Chpt 2 begins on pg. 38) We’ll begin by looking at the settlements that formed in the Nile valley and then start comparing the culture of the area to that of other settlements.  We’ll also be looking at one of my favorite topics, Mummification!!

 

French (Mme Pescatore) – French students will be finishing up Lesson 3 with a quiz on the numbers to 60 and then with a Lesson quiz. After, we will begin studying time in Lesson 4.

Latin: (Mr. Sullivan) – Students will be quizzed on the first and second conjugations in the present tense, singular and plural; they will learn how a predicate adjective must agree with the subject in case, number, and gender; and students will continue translating sentences from Latin into English

Health: (Mrs. Fay) – Students, in groups, will be analyzing a case of cyberbullying and presenting it to the class. We will be focusing on those who witness bullying and their opportunities to take action to stop it.

Science: (Mrs. Scelsi) – We have just started our study of the Origins of Life, where we will be learning the difference between prokaryotes and eukaryotes. The students will be observing and reflecting on different types of contamination as they relate to microorganisms and experiments conducted by famous scientists.  We will also be exploring classification and the basics of taxonomic grouping.  They will be practicing the use of dichotomous keys to classify different types of seeds.  In addition, the students were given vocabulary words and definitions on Friday, October 17th and there will be a vocabulary quiz on Tuesday, October 21st.

Math: (Ms. Miley) – Over the next two weeks we will be working on using number properties (commutative, associative, and distributive) to combine terms and simplify problems. There will a quiz on Thursday, Oct. 29th on the material. We will then begin work solving 2 step variable equations and writing equations from word problems. Homework will be posted to the blog and help is available after school.

Language Arts: (Mrs. Donovan) – “Verbs” will continue to be the focus of grammar classes next week.  Simple tenses and principal parts of irregular verbs will be covered.  A study group will be held after school on Monday, 10/27, until 2:30 in preparation for a quiz on this unit on Wednesday, 10/29.  Please arrange transportation ahead of time if your child wishes to attend the after-school session.  “Pronouns” will then be the next part of speech to be covered.  Our short story unit focusing on plot development will include “A Day’s Wait”, “A Boy and a Man”, “A Secret for Two”, and “Zoo”.  Vocabulary quizzes are scheduled for Thursday, 10/23, and Friday, 10/31.  Finally, written book reports are due on Friday, 10/24 – please remember, if the guidelines are not specifically followed, students will be asked to re-do the reports correctly before they are accepted for grading.  Students have paper copies of the guidelines and expectations, and the information is also available on our class blog.  REMINDER: Field trip money must be in by 10/31/14.

Social Studies: (Mrs. Evans) – Students have begun Chapter 2, Ancient Egypt, and have spent the week looking at the geographic conditions that allowed the ancient Egyptian civilization to flourish. We will begin work on a five paragraph essay comparing the civilizations of Sumer and Egypt. A good amount of class time will be spent going over the research process, such as creating a bibliography, outlining, and writing a thesis. The tentative due date for the final copy is Tuesday, Nov. 18th. Please check my blog for detailed directions and updates: 7CSS@wordpress.com. There will be a Country of the Day quiz on Monday, Oct. 20th. Students are allowed to use their Country of the Day notes for this quiz- but have to remember to bring them to class!
