June 5, 2015

Science: (Mrs. Pratt) – Students have a take-home test on Chapter 6, Evolution, which is due on Tuesday, 6/9.  Students may use the textbook as a reference to complete the take-home test.  Currently, students are participating in the dissection of a yellow perch.  This activity is culminating to the previous units studied on Evolution and Human Body Systems.  Next, students will use microscopes to observe protists such as Amoeba, paramecium, and many types of algae.  We will also be learning about bacteria and fungi.  Finally, students this year have raised over $350.00 in cans and bottles to be donated to the rainforest!  I wish everyone a wonderful and restful summer!

Math: (Mrs. Forrest) –   Students have wrapped up the unit on the Pythagorean Theorem with a quiz last Tuesday. Since then, they have been researching and preparing a topic to teach to the class.  Students are working with a partner or two to experience introducing, explaining, modeling, assisting classmates with, and correcting their classmates work on their topic.  They will start by writing a lesson plan and finish up with a self-assessment which will include their opinion on whether or not they enjoyed the experience and their reasons why.  Finally, students will be heading to Rollerworld next Wednesday, June, 10 for their 7A field trip!

Language Arts:  (Mrs. Kotarakos) – Today in class, we finished our book “I Promised I Would Tell”.  We will review on Monday and the test will be Tuesday, June 9th.  We will finish off the year with a unit on myths, legends, and folktales.  Students will also be writing their own original myths in class.  In grammar, students are finishing a review on the eight parts of speech.  There will be a test on Friday, June 12th.   Finally, all students should bring both their Writer’s Choice and Literature books back to school by Thursday, June 18th.  Have a wonderful summer, and don’t forget the eighth grade summer reading requirements!

Social Studies: (Mrs. O’Connell) – The final examination in Social Studies that was scheduled for Monday, June 8th has been cancelled. Instead, a revised version of the test that will include a map section and thirty-five questions from our study of ancient Rome and Section 1 of Chapter 10, Christianity, will be given on Tuesday, June 9th. We will review in class for this test and maps will be distributed for students to study at home. We will continue to study Sections 2 and 3 of Chapter 10, Christianity, through the end of the year.

Many end of the year events will be coming up in the next few weeks. Our field trip to Roller World will take place on Wednesday, June 10. Field Day is scheduled for Friday, June 12.

Spanish (Sra. Barkley)- Students will be preparing for their Quiz on ER and IR verbs as well as irregular verbs Tener and Ver.

Spanish: (Ms. Mirabella) – Next week, students will be reviewing for their Chapter 5 test. Extra help is available after school on Tuesday, 6/9 until 2:30! The Chapter 5 Test will be on Thursday, 6/10. The following week, students will be exploring family member vocabulary. This vocabulary will be taught again in 8th grade at the beginning of the year.

Spanish (Sra. Abrams) – Spanish students will be finishing up Chapter 5 with a listening and a written test.

Italian: – (Signora Pescatore) – Students will be finishing up activities in Chapter 4 with a quiz on the verb avere used correctly in sentences and an introduction to the -ere verbs, the second group of regular verbs in Italian (pages 94 – 98).

Health: – (Mrs. Fay) –  Students will be finishing up the unit on aging by writing two paragraphs about an older person they know and debunking many myths about older people. Our next unit will be about loss and grieving.

Health (Ms. Eovine) –  Students will be finishing the puberty unit.  There will be a quiz this week. Students will begin the safety and first aid unit.  Focus will be on how to treat emergencies, epi pen use, nosebleeds and taking care of cuts and abrasions.  Student will watch a video and have some hands on learning experiences in these areas.

Science: (Ms. Cerretani):  We have just finished our unit on Evolution and will be starting a new unit on the Bacteria Kingdoms.  Students will be able to identify the characteristics of bacteria cells and know why bacteria is actually important.  For the last weeks of school, we will also be squeezing in our unit of Ecology.

Math: (Mr. Vitale) – Next week, we will be finishing up our study of the Pythagorean Theorem. During the end of next week and the following week, we will be constructing and studying reflections, rotations, translations and dilations using the coordinate plane.

Language Arts: – (Ms. D’Arcangelo) –  We are currently finishing our unit on the book I Promised I Would Tell. The unit will end with a test on Wednesday, June 10. Books will also be collected on this day.  We will finish off the year with a unit on myths, legends, and folktales.  Students will also be writing their own original myths in class.Students took their last vocab quiz for the unit today in class. Book reports will also be completed on Monday. In grammar, we will be taking the grammar post test the week of June 15th (tentatively set for Tuesday, the 16th, but please visit my blog for the final date). Our team field trip will be Friday, June 19th to Roller Palace. Reminder: Both grammar and literature textbooks should be returned to school on Thursday, 6/18.  Have a safe and happy summer and do not forget to read your summer reading books!

Social Studies: (Mr. Kingston) – We’ve been finishing up our unit on ancient Rome, talking about the split into the Byzantine empire.  We’ll be having a test Tuesday, June 9th on chapter 9.  After that we’ll look at the construction of the Colosseum and be making ancient roman banquet menus.

Science (Mrs. Scelsi) – We will be wrapping up our unit on Evolution with an open-book/open-note test on Monday, June 8th.  I will collect the LSAF book from the students on June 9th.  We will then begin our study of three additional kingdoms; bacteria, protists and fungi.  The students will be participating in a microscopy lab on the 10th and 11th.  The 7C field trip is scheduled for Monday, June 15th.  We will spend the remainder of the school year covering Ecology.

Math: (Ms. Miley) – Students are presenting their lessons related to financial education over the next 2 weeks in their groups. They have utilizing the internet and parent experiences to research their topic, creating documents (outlines, lesson plans, scripts,slideshows) sharing with each other and myself in Google drive. Students will have quiz each Friday on the material covered that week. After the presentations, students will be working on a design that requires them to work with decimals. They will also view a math related movie on Fractal Geometry and Origami. After school help days and homework will be on the blog.

Language Arts: (Mrs. Donovan) – Verbals will continue to be the focus of grammar classes as we complete our study of gerunds and then cover infinitives.  The List IV vocabulary quiz will be given on Thursday, 6/11.  The final vocabulary list of the year will then be introduced based on our reading of fables, myths, and legends.  The grammar post-test will be administered the week of the 15th (tentatively set for Tuesday, the 16th).  Finally, our team spelling bee will also be scheduled during our final full week of school.  Reminder: Both grammar and literature textbooks should be returned to school on Thursday, 6/18.  Have a safe and happy summer!

Social Studies: (Mrs. Evans) – The Final Exam that was scheduled for Monday has been cancelled and a revised test will be given on Wednesday, June 10th. This test will cover Chapter 9, the beginning of Chapter 10, and a map. It will count as 2 test grades. A review will be held in class and students were sent home with study materials this week. Students are also working on their “Design Your Own Homework” assignment based on a topic in Christianity. These assignments/presentations are due Thursday, June 11th.
