Grade 8 Newsletter 10/3/14

8A

 October 3, 2014

Math: (Ms. Mantia)  – Next week we will begin our work with Chapter 2.  Students will review the number line as well as addition and subtraction of integers.  Students will also learn how to use addition and subtraction of integers to model real-world situations such as profits and losses of a company.

Social Studies: (Mrs. Volpe) – Students will continue their studies on how Africa’s geography influenced the rise of its civilizations.  “Say It In Arabic” projects will be due on Monday. Maps will be due on Wednesday and there  will be a quiz on Friday.

Science: (Ms. Gorham) – This week in Physical Science we did hands on activities pertaining to our study on matter.  We tried to understand the particulate nature of matter.  We also realized that there is a lot of empty space between particles of matter.  We took our second quiz of the year on Friday.  Next week, we will  continue to  learn more about the particulate nature of matter and we will learn about elements.

ELA: (Mr. Pearl) – Next week we will continue our reading of ROTHMC. We will also finish our grammar unit on the functions of nouns. See weekly assignment sheet for details.

 

Italian: (Mrs. Pescatore) – Students will be able to give their address in Italian and briefly describe where they live. They will learn how to conjugate and use some -ire verbs from the third group of regular verbs (pages 115 – 120).

Spanish: (Sra. Abrams) – Spanish students will complete their oral one-on-one quiz with la profesora. We will then be starting Chapter 6, learning family vocabulary.

Spanish: (Ms. Mirabella) –  Next week, students will take an -ar, -er, -ir (plus ver, dar, & ir) verb quiz on Monday 10/6 for 8B & C, and Tuesday 10/7 for 8A. Next, students will review for their “Examen de Repaso,” which incorporates all of the 7th grade Spanish we have been reviewing. 8B will take this test on Thursday 10/9 and 8A & C will take this test on Friday 10/10. Extra help is available after school on Tuesday & Thursday!

Latin: (Mr. Sullivan) – Students will be tested on Stage 13 Vocabulary;  They will review the placement of adjectives and which prepositions take accusative case and which ablative case and they will continue translating  sentences from Latin into English.

Health: (Mrs. Fay) – Students will complete their personal health inventory.  Then we will begin our unit on digital citizenship, focusing on how to behave respectfully online.   Check out https://sites.google.com/a/bpsk12.org/mrs-fay-s-8th-grade-health-class/  for more information.

October 3, 2014

Math: (Mr. Peterson) – This week, students began chapter 2 in the textbook.  We completed 2.1 (absolute value), 2.2 (adding with positives and negatives), and we began section 2.3 (subtracting with negatives).  Next week, we will continue with 2.5 (multiplying with variables) and 2.6 (distributive property).

Social Studies: (Mrs. DiSipio) – Students will be taking their Chapter 11 Test on Tuesday, October 7th. There will be a review session immediately after school on Monday, October 6th.  Students should use their study guides and review vocabulary, homework and presentation notes to help prepare for the test.  We will then begin our unit on Africa beginning with the geography and how the land helped shape medieval African lives.

ELA: (Mrs. Bergeron) – We will continue our Suspense Unit next week with “The Necklace” and “The Monkey’s Paw.”  Students will continue working on their independent reading projects which they were given earlier this week.  Details for that assignment can be found on the team blog.  We will also conclude our Functions of Nouns unit next week.  Students should expect a test on that grammar unit toward the end of the week.

Science: (Mr. Marino)– Students just took a 20 question quiz on “Intro to Atoms”. Their grades will be up on aspen for the weekend. Next week we will talk about how atoms bind to each  other and how they make larger structures.

Math: (Mrs. Wilkes) – Students have learned how to express very large numbers and very small numbers in scientific notation as well as apply scientific notation to real world problems.  Next week we will begin looking at properties of real numbers.

Social Studies: (Mrs. Bova) – We will review the kingdoms in West Africa and East Africa.  A quiz on Chapter 13 Section 1 will be given on Wednesday.  Following our quiz, students will discover how the growth of empires led to centralized governments ruled by kings.

Journal Prompt #2 will be introduced on Monday and student responses are due no later than nine o’clock on Friday night

Science: (Mr. Hickman) –  Next week, students will begin their study of the structure and characteristics of atoms. There will be a quiz on particles and atoms at the end of the week. Each student should now have a science notebook, a 3-ring binder, that contains all the resources and products for this class:  notes, reading handouts and homework in the first section;  lab sheets and reports in the second section; and, tests and test corrections in the third section.

ELA: (Mrs. Nelson-Boyd) – Next week we will continue to read and discuss the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.  It is important that students keep up with the reading assignments.  Students should also be reading their independent novel at home.
