Grade 8 Newsletter 9/12/14

     September 12, 2014

Math: (Ms. Mantia) – There will be a quiz on Tuesday.  Topics include fractions, decimals, variable expressions, exponents, and word problems.  After the quiz, we will begin work on section 1.3 which is order of operations.  This section will include an emphasis on modeling and solving real-world situations such as determining discounts and sales tax.

Social Studies: (Mrs. Volpe) – Next week we will be learning about how the followers of Islam, called Muslims, conquered or converted people as they spread their faith throughout the Middle East and the Mediterranean.

Science: (Ms. Gorham) – In science we continue to learn about metric system.  We learnt about different units of measurement like Kilometer, Hectometer, Decameter, Decimeter, Centimeter, Millimeter for length./distance.  We also started measuring mass in metric units using triple beam balance.  Next week, we will measure volume in class.

ELA: (Mr. Pearl) – Next week we will continue our reading of short stories. Students should also be reading their independent reading books. We will continue our grammar packet work, and the students will begin work on a composition assignment. See weekly assignment sheet for details.

 

Italian: (Mrs. Pescatore) – Students will be using -ere verbs in sentences. They will have a quiz on Thursday, September 18th.

Spanish: (Sra. Abrams) –  Spanish students will be reviewing meanings of verbs from grade 7. There will be a quiz on this vocabulary mid-week. We will also be reviewing the present tense conjugations of regular verbs. These elements are necessary tools for communication in Spanish.

Spanish: (Ms. Mirabella) – Next week, students will be finishing up their review with the “to be” verbs “ser” and “estar.” We will have a quiz on both verbs (conjugations & uses) mid week. At the end of the week, we will begin reviewing basic vocabulary from 7th grade Spanish, such as months, days of the week, greetings & goodbyes, and time. Extra help for the ser & estar quiz will be available after school!

Latin: (Mr. Sullivan) –  Students will have a test next week on second declension, masculine and neuter genders, single and plural, they will translate the paragraph “Rufilla” and they will have a quiz on the imperfect tense first conjugation.

Health: (Mrs. Fay) –  Students will be thinking about how public health officials try to keep large populations of people healthy.  Students will pretend they are the Secretary of Health and Human Services and make some decisions about allocating resources and prioritizing health needs.

Math: (Mr. Peterson) – This week, students finished section 1.1(variables) and 1.2 (exponents), and there was a quiz on these two sections.  After th

e quiz, we began section 1.3 (order of operations).  Next week, we will continue with 1.3, 1.4 (equations and inequalities), and 1.5 (problem solving).

Social Studies: (Mrs. DiSipio) – The students will be having a quiz on Wednesday, September 16th.  The quiz will cover the vocabulary from class and readings from Chapter 11, Section 1.  We will also begin discussing how Islam spread through Arabia and into North Africa.

Science: (Mr. Marino) –  Next week students will continue working with the metric System to measure mass, distance and liquids. We will do more labs that incorporate the proper methods of measurements. Students are using Ipads and Google Classroom to post their lab reports, models and assignments.

ELA: (Mrs. Bergeron) – We will continue our short story unit next week by reading a few more stories. Students should prepare for a vocabulary quiz towards the end of next week.  We will also continue our grammar work by beginning a new set of M.U.G. shots.  Students should be reading their independent reading books at home.

Health: (Mrs. Fay) –  Students will be thinking about how public health officials try to keep large populations of people healthy.  Students will pretend they are the Secretary of Health and Human Services and make some decisions about allocating resources and prioritizing health needs.

Math: (Mrs. Wilkes) –  Students will be tested MONDAY over sections 1.1 – 1.3 in their Algebra Text.  This includes variables in algebra, exponents and powers, and order of operations.  We will next take a look at equations and inequalities.

Social Studies: (Mrs. Bova) –  Students will be finishing chapter 11, section 2 and we will have a quiz on Tuesday.

Science: (Mr. Hickman) –  Next week, students will continue their study of the metric system with several labs involving solids and liquids.  There will be a quiz on measurement using the metric system on Thursday.

ELA: (Mrs. Nelson-Boyd) – Next week,students will be working on writing a Short Story. So far students have read two short stories and we will be continuing with the short story unit next week. A second list of Vocabulary words(#’s 11-20) would be given on Monday. There will be a quiz on those words on Friday.
