     September 26, 2014

Math: (Ms. Mantia) –  There will be a quiz on sections 1.3 – 1.5 on Monday.  Students received a study guide today to help prepare.  After the quiz, students will learn section 1.7 which is functions.  There will be a Chapter 1 test on Friday.  This test covers variables, exponents, order of operations, equations, inequalities, expressions, translations, functions, and word problems.  Students will receive a study guide on Wednesday to help prepare for the test.  I encourage students to stay for the extra help session on Thursday from 2:00 – 2:30.

Social Studies: (Mrs. Volpe) – Next week we will be having a test on Islam, and we will  begin a new on Africa.  Students will learn about Africa’s geography and how it influenced the rise of civilizations.

Science: (Ms. Gorham) – This week in Physical Science we learnt about matter.  We learnt that there are four states of matter, matter has mass and it occupies space.  We also looked at the Atomic Theory, its history, scientists involved in its evolution and how it lead to the current theory.  This also gave us an opportunity to understand the Nature of Science.

ELA: (Mr. Pearl) – Next week we will begin a literature unit on the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. We will also continue our grammar work on the functions of nouns. Additionally, students will complete their Treasure essays and their book reports. See weekly assignment sheet for details.

 

Italian: (Mrs. Pescatore) – Students will be having their quiz on the possessive adjectives on Wednesday, October 1st. We will begin Chapter 4 on the house and will learn some introductory vocabulary on pages 111 and 112.

Spanish: (Sra. Abrams) –  Students will review time (in Spanish) and will be answering questions on various topics in full sentences in Spanish. Students will be able to practice in class and then will need to be able to answer questions one on one.

Spanish: (Ms. Mirabella) – Next week, students will be reviewing both regular and irregular -AR, -ER, and -IR verbs from 7th grade. They will review both the meanings of these verbs, and their conjugations. Students should be prepared to take a quiz on these verbs at the end of the week. Extra help is available after school on Tuesdays & Thursdays.

Latin: (Mr. Sullivan) – Students will  review the dative case and relearn the indirect object in English; they will read and be quizzed on the agreement of adjectives and nouns in number, gender, and case; and students will continue translating sentences from Latin into English.

Health: (Mrs. Fay) – Students will finish up thinking about Public Health and complete a personal health inventory.  Students will discuss what personal health habits are most important.  Then, we will begin the unit on cyberbullying.

Math: (Mr. Peterson) – This week, students finished chapter 1 in the textbook.  We worked on section 1.6 (graphs/tables) and 1.7 (functions).  We will have the chapter 1 test on Tuesday.  Following the chapter 1 test, we will begin chapter 2 (positive/negative numbers and the distributive property).

Social Studies: (Mrs. DiSipio) – Next week, students will learn about the cultural and scientific achievements of Muslim civilization, as well as about the daily life of the peoples of the Muslim Empire.  Students should expect a quiz on Chapter 11, Section 3 next week.

ELA: (Mrs. Bergeron) – Students took a test on the short stories we read during the unit.  To finish the unit, students will turn in their completed final drafts of their short story on Tuesday.  We will begin looking at the five functions of nouns in our next grammar unit, and students will be given their next project on their independent reading books.

Spanish: (Sra. Barkley) – Students will continue their review of verbs from 7th grade. We will concentrate on AR verbs and then move on to ER and IR verbs as well as a few irregular verbs.

French: (Mme Abrams) –  French students will be studying adverb vocabulary (page 114) from Lesson 15. We will also be expressing wanting to, being able to, having to, and preferring as they are used with activities. Towards the end of the week, we will prepare for the Lesson quiz.

Health: (Mrs. Fay) – Students will finish up thinking about Public Health and complete a personal health inventory.  Students will discuss what personal health habits are most important.  Then, we will begin the unit on cyberbullying.

Math: (Mrs. Wilkes) – It was good to meet many of you at our Back to School Night this week.  We are off to a good start this year.  Next week students will have their second test of this year.  It will cover sections 1.4 – 1.7 as well as fractions and decimals.  The method of scientific notation, which is often used to express very large numbers and very small numbers (such as the distance to another planet) will be our next topic.

Social Studies: (Mrs. Bova) – Students’ Book Cover Project is due on Monday.  Next week, students will discover how the African continent has a varied landscape that gave rise to many diverse cultures,  Students will also be introduced to our Journal Prompt procedure.  Journal Prompt #1 must be submitted to www.classroom.google.com by 9:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Science: (Mr. Hickman) –  Next week students will continue their study of matter with several labs describing and evaluating the the nature of atoms.  The textbook, The Nature of Matter, and several handout readings will be used as resources.  Test Corrections for the Metrics quiz are due on Tuesday.

ELA: (Mrs. Nelson-Boyd) – On Tuesday, students will take a test on the literature unit we just finished.  Classes received many review questions and also had an extensive review in class.  Next week we will begin the unit on Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry.  It is important that students keep up with the reading assignments. We will also begin a new grammar unit on nouns.
