Grade 8 Newsletters 10/9/2015

October 9, 2015   

Science: (Mrs. Gorham) – Next week the students will begin their unit on Chemistry. We will discuss physical and chemical changes. Students will also receive their tests and projects back. We will be working on our Matter Lab Reports. Lab Reports will be due on Friday.
Math: (Ms. Mantia) – There will be a quiz on adding and subtracting integers (positive and negative numbers) on Wednesday.  Students received a review worksheet to complete for homework to help prepare for the quiz.  After the quiz, students will learn multiplication and division with integers.  Students will also learn how to model real-world situations such as monetary loss per day or change in elevation using negative numbers.
Social Studies: (Mr. Nelson) – This week we finished up Chapter 11 on Islamic Civilizations. We had the test on Friday, and will be starting Chapter 12 “China in the Middle Ages” next week.
ELA: (Mrs. Kotarakos) – Next week, we will continue our literature unit on hair raising tales. Students will be writing the rough draft for their first book report in class on Thursday.  All students should bring in their notes and books.  In addition, students are continuing to write their original short story.  This will be completed over the next two weeks.  Finally, on Friday students will have a vocabulary quiz on the first list of words for the hair raising tales literature unit.  
Italian: (Mrs. Pescatore) – Students will be working in Chapter 5, The House, and will be learning how to give their address in Italian. There will be a quiz on the vocabulary on pages 111 and 112 on Thursday, October 15th.
Spanish: (Ms. Mirabella) – Next week will be dedicated to reviewing the two “to be” verbs, “ser” and “estar.” Students should expect a quiz the following week on both verbs (conjugations and uses).
Spanish: (Sra. Abrams) –  Early next week, Spanish students will be finishing up oral interviews answering questions verbally. We will then begin Chapter 6 and family vocabulary.
Spanish: (Señora Barkley) – Students will have their first Oral of the year (on review material) and then we will begin Chapter 6.
Health: (Mrs. Fay) –  Students will complete a personal health inventory to help them evaluate their own personal health habits.  Then, we will begin the unit on how to behave in cyberspace, focusing on how to prevent and solve bullying problems online.

ELA: (Mrs. Bergeron/Mr. Pearl)- Next week we will begin the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. We will also begin a grammar unit on adjectives and adverbs. See weekly assignment sheet for details.
Social Studies:  (Mrs. DiSipio) – Students will be taking the Chapter 11 test on Wednesday.  We will be playing a review game in class on Tuesday.  Students should use their presentation and vocabulary notes to help them prepare.  On Thursday, we will begin our unit on China. 
Science:  (Mr. Marino) – Students learned about the different levels of viscosity this week. Next week we will explore how gasses and solids react in the presence of heat.
Math:  (Mr. Peterson) –  This week, we continued chapter 2 in the textbook.  We worked on section 2.5 (multiplying with variables) and 2.6 (distributive property).  We will have a quiz on these 2 sections next week.

Social Studies:  (Mrs. Volpe) – Next week we will be studying China. We will be learning how Chinese rulers brought peace, order, and growth to China.  Students will compare and contrast the major ideas within the religions of Buddhism and Confucianism.  
ELA:  (Mrs. Nelson-Boyd) – Next week, we will continue the literature unit on hair raising tales.  We will also finish the grammar unit on nouns and review for a test.
Students received their October/November independent reading assignment.  Novel titles are due on Tuesday.
Math:  (Mrs. Wilkes) – We are continuing with Chapter 2, reviewing real numbers.  Upon returning from the holiday on Monday we will review, and students will be tested on Tuesday over 2.1 – 2.3.  Then we will continue with more review of real numbers in Chapter 2.
Science:  (Mr. Hickman) – Next week, students will continue their study of matter with several labs testing the relationship between particle motion and phases of matter.
French:  (Mme Pescatore) – In Lesson 16 students will be working on how to form questions. There will be a quiz on ten question words found on  page 120 and in their notes on Thursday, October 15th.

Latin:  (Mr. Sullivan/Mr. Finnigan) – Next week, students will review the Quest on Chapter 1 and proceed through Chapter 2. They will be examining various aspects of the Latin verbal system, as well as the Roman comedic tradition and its influence on modern comedic productions. There will be a vocabulary quiz on the Chapter 2 “Vocabulary to Learn” on Friday, 10/16. A Quest on Chapter 2 is scheduled for Wednesday, 10/21.
