Grade 8 Newsletters 11/14/2014

8A

November 14, 2014

Math: (Ms. Mantia)  – There will be a Chapter 2 test on Monday.  All students received a study guide including integer operation rules, practice problems, and word problems.  After the test, we will begin Chapter 3 Solving Linear Equations.  We will begin the chapter with one and two-step equations involving addition and subtraction.

Social Studies: (Mrs. Volpe) – Next week we will be learning about how the Tang dynasties strengthened China’s economy by supporting farming and trade. We will be having a quiz on Friday.

Science: (Ms. Gorham) – Next week the students will finish their Chemistry Unit. We will focus on Bonds. There will be a test on Friday. I will be after school for extra help on Thursday.

ELA: (Mr. Pearl) – Next week we will continue our work on the MCLP. Students will be conducting interviews and will be starting their novels. We will also begin the research portion of the assignment. Our grammar focus will be on the functions of pronouns. See weekly assignment sheet for details.

 

Italian: (Mrs. Pescatore) – Students will be learning how to use the contractions for “in the” to indicate where something is located. A detailed chart can be found on text page 133. When ready, students will take a quiz on this concept.

Spanish: (Sra. Abrams) – Spanish students will be working on idiomatic expressions with TENER and IR along with possessive adjectives in Chapter 6.

Spanish: (Ms. Mirabella) –  Next week, students will be reviewing their Chapter 6 vocabulary, grammar, and culture sections for a test. The Chapter 6 Test will be given on Wednesday, November 19th for 8B, and Thursday, November 20th for 8A & 8C.

Latin: (Mr. Sullivan) – Students will review the dative and accusative cases and do exercises on page 63; they will begin studying the pluperfect tense in English and then study and be quizzed on the pluperfect tense in Latin;  and students will continue translating sentences from Latin into English.

Health: (Mrs. Fay) – Students will be beginning the unit on stress and its impact on health.  First, to gain an understanding of the influence of our perceptions on our health, students will discuss the placebo effect.  Students will consider whether placebos are ethical, truly effective as treatments, and/or supported by research.

November 14, 2014

Math: (Mr. Peterson) – This week, students began chapter 3 (solving equations).  We finished 3.1 (equations using addition/subtraction) and 3.2 (equations using multiplication/division).  Next week we will have a quiz on these two sections, and we will begin section 3.3(solving multi-step equations).

Social Studies: (Mrs. DiSipio) – We will continue our unit on China with the study of Confucianism and Buddhism.  Students will be able to explain why Buddhism became popular in China and why scholars valued Confucianism.  Students should expect a vocabulary quiz and use their homework vocabulary and class notes to prepare.

ELA: (Mrs. Bergeron) – The rough draft of the interview essay was due on Friday.  We will be spending some class time next week self and peer editing to produce the final draft.  We will also have a pronoun quiz on Wednesday.  Students were given a study guide this week to help them prepare.  Oral presentations on the Multicultural-Literature Novel will begin on Thursday.  Details and rubrics for these assignments can be found on the team blog.

Science: (Mr. Marino)–  Students finished up the Gum Drop Molecule Lab. Before Vacation they will have a chemistry test covering material from the past 3-4 weeks.

French: (Mme Abrams) –  Monday, students can expect a quiz on the vocabulary of pages 138-9. After, we will be working on vocabulary of everyday objects (page 140) and personal possessions (page 142), also found in Lesson 17.

Math: (Mrs. Wilkes) – Next week we will continue our work on solving linear equations.  Students should be able to explain how to solve multi-step equations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  We will spend the week on linear equations, and a test will be given the following week.

Social Studies: (Mrs. Bova) – Next week we will continue to learn about Chinese Society. The students will read poems and analyze Chinese art. The students should expect a quiz on Wednesday.

Science: (Mr. Hickman) – Next week, students will continue their study of matter with several labs testing different forms of mixtures and solutions.  A lab report on the conservation of mass balloon experiment will be due on Friday.  An outline for lab reports is available on the 8C homework blog.

ELA: (Mrs. Nelson-Boyd) – Next week students will begin reading the play Twelve Angry Men.  Prior to reading I will introduce the play and give some background information about our justice system.  Students will get the opportunity to play a character in class.

We will also start a new grammar unit on verbs next week.
