8A

December 12, 2014

Math: (Miss Mantia) – Students will learn how to solve equations with variables on both sides of the equation.  Students will also learn how to model real-world situations using these types of equations.  Examples include finding break-even points and comparing the total cost of going to a gym as a member or a non-member.  There will be a quiz on Thursday.

Social Studies: (Mrs. Volpe) – Next week we will be learning about Zheng He’s travels and how they led to the creation of Chinese colonies throughout Southeast Asia.  We will also be having a quiz on the Ming Dynasty.

Science:  (Ms. Gorham) – next week the students will finish their unit on Density. Their lab reports will be due on Tuesday Dec 16.  There will be a test on Density on Friday.

ELA: (Mr. Pearl) – Next week we will dedicate the entire week to MCLP oral presentations. I will not be distributing a weekly assignment sheet.

 

Italian: (Mrs. Pescatore) – Students will be learning the irregular verb dovere (to have to, must) on text pages 130 – 132. There will be a quiz on the verb used in sentences before vacation. Buone vacanze!

Spanish: (Sra. Abrams) – Spanish students will be starting vocabulary from Chapter 7 Palabras 2 on baseball and basketball. We will also watch the video entitled “Sweet 15” related to our study of the family and quinceañera. ¡Felices fiestas!

Spanish: (Ms. Mirabella) – Next week, students will take their Words 2/Palabras Dos quiz on baseball and basketball vocabulary on Monday (8B&C) and on Tuesday (8A). For the remainder of the week, students will be introduced to stem-changing verbs. We will continue our work with these verbs once we return from the winter break. Happy Holidays!

Latin: (Mr. Sullivan) –Students will use derivatives from Latin words in sentences, and then write the Latin root and its meaning for each derivative; students will be quizzed on all four tenses: present, imperfect, perfect, and pluperfect; and students will continue translating sentences from Latin into English.

Health: (Mrs. Fay) – Students will be finishing up the unit on stress by learning about several stress reduction techniques, including deep breathing and guided imagery.

Math: (Mr. Peterson) –   This week, students had a quiz on sections 3.3 and 3.4 (solving equations with variables on both sides).  On Wednesday and Thursday, we worked on the ‘animal project,’ which uses proportions and ratios to correctly draw a poster of the student with their chosen animal.  This poster is due on Monday.  Next week, we will continue working on chapter 3.

Social Studies: (Mrs. DiSipio) –  Next week, students will begin studying the rise of Genghis Khan and the accomplishments of the Mongol Empire.  Students should expect a quiz next week and should use their class and vocabulary notes to prepare.

ELA: (Mrs. Bergeron) – Students have started reading Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.  We will continue next week by reading chapters 3-6.  Students will work on the vocabulary from the chapters as well as begin working on a group project for the novel.

Science: (Mr. Marino)– This week we have been working on determining volume. Using V= LxHxW students will use this formula to then determine the mass of an object, to ultimately calculate density. Homework has been given out everyday this week and checked, so that means aspen is up to date in science. Students are always encouraged to be aware if the current grade so that if any concerns form, they can be active about correcting it.

French: (Mme Abrams) – French students will be working in Lesson 18, studying the verb “avoir” and some idiomatic expressions using this verb. Bonnes fêtes!

Health: (Mrs. Fay) – Students will be finishing up the unit on stress by learning about several stress reduction techniques, including deep breathing and guided imagery.

Math: (Mrs. Wilkes) –  Next week students will be tested over solving equations with variables on both sides, linear equations and problem solving, and formulas/function form.  We will then spend several days on the Pythagorean Theorem.

Social Studies: (Mrs. Bova) – On Monday, students will take a Chapter 12 test on Medieval China.  Following their test, we will begin reviewing for our mid-year assessment. test  A study guide will be given to students on Friday.  It is important that students take 15-30 minutes each night reviewing.

Science: (Mr. Hickman) –  Next week students will continue their study of density with several labs evaluating the densities of various liquids and gases.  On Friday, there will be a test on the concepts and formulae for density in materials.

ELA: (Mrs. Nelson-Boyd) – Next week students will view the film Twelve Angry Men.  We will discuss the importance of literature in film as well as a compare and contrast both the play and film.

I will also hand out and go over a study guide and review for the mid year assessment exam.
