Grade 8 Newsletters 12/5/2014

         December 5, 2014

Math: (Ms. Mantia)  – Students will solve multi-step equations using reverese PEMDAS.  Students will solve multi-step equations involving like terms and distributive property.  Students will also apply a multi-step equation to the solution of real-world situations.  For example, students will determine how many products a person sells based on total pay, base pay, and commission pay.  There will be a quiz on Friday.

Social Studies: (Mrs. Volpe) – Next week we will be having a quiz on the Mongols and then we will be visiting China’s Ming Dynasty.  Students will learn how the Ming rulers strengthened their government and brought peace and prosperity.  Students will understand the importance of trading voyages to the economy of Asia and East Africa.

Science: (Ms. Gorham) – Next week the students will continue their unit on Density. We will focus on the density of liquids and calculating density. There will be a quiz on Thursday and a Lab Report will be assigned on Friday.

ELA: (Mr. Pearl) – Next week we will continue our MCLP work. There are specific due dates to be aware of. See weekly assignment sheet for details.

 

Italian: (Mrs. Pescatore) – Students will be learning how to use the verb dovere, to have to or must, with other verbs in order to express what a person must do (pages 130 – 132). There will be a quiz on the monuments of Italy from notes and from textbook pages 137 and 138 on Thursday, December 11th.

Spanish: (Sra. Abrams) – Spanish students will continue working with the vocabulary from Ch. 7 Palabras 1 on soccer. A quiz will be scheduled during the week. Extra credit holiday cards are due Tuesday!

Spanish: (Ms. Mirabella) – Next week, students will perform their soccer skits in pairs, and review for their vocabulary quiz on pages 190-191. Students will take the quiz the following class, and begin exploring vocabulary about baseball and basketball. Students will review these words with a game the last class of the week, in preparation for a quiz on pgs. 194-195 on Monday 12/15 for 8B & 8C, and Tuesday 12/16 for 8A.

Latin: (Mr. Sullivan) – Students will begin doing sentences with third declension nouns, masculine, feminine, and neuter, singular and plural; they will have a vocabulary test on chapter  16; and they will continue translating sentences from Latin into English.

Health: (Mrs. Fay) – Students will be continuing their study of the impact of stress on the body by reading and presenting recent research articles on how stress affects learning and health.

Math: (Mr. Peterson) –   This week, students worked on section 3.4 ( solving equations with variables on both sides).  On Friday, we began section 3.5 (solving word problems using equations).  Next week, we will have a quiz on section 3.3 and 3.4 on Tuesday.

Social Studies: (Mrs. DiSipio) –  Students will be reading about the rise of new agricultural methods, trade activity along the Silk Road, and new technologies in medieval China.  There will be a quiz on Chapter 12, Section 2 at the end of the week.  Students should use their class and vocabulary notes to help them prepare.

ELA: (Mrs. Bergeron) – Students will be self and peer editing their research papers at the beginning of next week.  The final draft will be turned in on Thursday.  We will finish our pronoun unit, and we will begin our Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry unit by discussing The Great Depression and racism that greatly affected the characters in the novel.

Science: (Mr. Marino)– Fantastic job on the quiz today! Grades will be up on ASPEN shortly. Remember we are jumping around in the chemistry book a little bit and over the weekend we will be doing Chapter 3 Section 1. Spanish: (Sra. Barkley) – Students will have their Chapter 6 Test on Tuesday and will then begin learning new vocabulary from Chapter 7.

French: (Mme Abrams)After completing written descriptions of their rooms, French students will be presenting orally to the class. We will review the grammar and vocabulary of the lesson and finish Lesson 17 with a quiz.

Health: (Mrs. Fay) – Students will be continuing their study of the impact of stress on the body by reading and presenting recent research articles on how stress affects learning and health.

December 5, 2014

Math: (Mrs. Wilkes) – Students will look more at solving equations with variables on both sides.  Then we will study linear equations and problem solving, as well as formulas and functions.

Social Studies: (Mrs. Bova) – Next week the students will learn about the Ming Dynasty. The students will learn how the Ming rulers strengthened China’s government and how they restored peace and prosperity.

Science: (Mr. Hickman) –  Next week, students will begin their study of density with several labs measuring the mass/volume ratio of solids and liquids.  The objective section of the chemistry test was returned today and test corrections are due on Monday.

ELA: (Mrs. Nelson-Boyd) – Next week we will review the functions of nouns.  There will be a test  on the functions of nouns later in the week.  This will be a good preparation as we begin to discuss the midyear assessment and the grammar portion of the exam.

We will finish reading Act Three of “Twelve Angry Men” and review for the test on the entire play next week as well.  I have been very impressed with the students’ enthusiasm to take part in the play and class discussions.

 

French: (Mme Pescatore) – French students will review the grammar and vocabulary of the lesson and finish Lesson 17 with a quiz.
