Grade 8 Newsletters 3/13/2015

8A

     March 13, 2015

Social Studies: (Mrs. Volpe) –We will be continuing our studies on Medieval Europe. Students will understand the effects that the fall of the Roman Empire had on Europe, and how the rise of feudalism helped create a more stable economy. Students will be having a quiz at the end of the week.
Math:  (Miss Mantia) – There will be a Chapter 4 test on Wednesday.  Extra help is Tuesday from 2:00-2:30.  Students will receive a study guide to prepare for the test.  This test covers the three methods of graphing linear equations (slope-intercept form, x and y intercepts, and tables of ordered pairs) as well as word problems.
Science: (Ms. Gorham) –  Next week the students will focus on the effects of Air
Resistance. The students have also received their Biology MCAS review packet. We continue to prepare for MCAS.
ELA: (Mr. Pearl) – Next week we will continue our grammar work on the uses of the apostrophe. Students should also finish their “Book-Movie” books. They will be writing their book reports. We will also be previewing the upcoming PARCC tests. See weekly assignment sheet for details.
Italian: (Mrs. Pescatore) – Students will be able to say what they can and cannot do using the irregular verb potere (pages 182 and 183). There will be a quiz on andare with expressions (pages 176 – 180).
Spanish: (Sra. Abrams) – Spanish students will be studying the two verbs for “to be”, SER and ESTAR.
Spanish: (Ms. Mirabella) – Next week, students will review all Chapter 8 vocabulary, grammar, and culture in preparation for their Chapter 8 exam. The Chapter 8 exam will be on Friday, March 20th for 8A. Extra help is available after school on Tuesday and Thursday!
Latin: (Mrs. Matthews) – Next week we will continue our grammar review. We review verbs in all tenses (present, perfect, imperfect and pluperfect).  We will focus on the ablative case and how to use this case. At the end of the week the students should expect a quiz about the review.
Health: (Mrs. Fay) –  Students will be finishing up the alcohol unit by creating a truthful advertisement about the harmful effects of alcohol.  Next, we will begin a unit on other harmful substances, namely illegal drugs.
Health (Ms. Eovine) – Students will be working on group drug projects.  They will have 2 class periods to prepare and the 3rd class they will present to the class.  Students will be provided a rubric, and web-sites to use as resources.

 March 13, 2015 

Math: (Mr. Peterson) –  This week, students finished the x-box project, which used slope-intercept form and systems of equations.  Following the project, we worked on PARCC review in the ‘Finish Line’ workbook that each student received in class.  We reviewed geometry and functions.  Next week, we will continue our review with systems, exponents, rational numbers, statistics, and linear equations.
Social Studies: (Mrs. DiSipio) – Students will be studying the emergence of Feudalsim in medieval Europe.  Students should expect one quiz next week.
ELA: (Mrs. Bergeron) – Students will have an in-class writing prompt on Act I of Twelve Angry Men on Tuesday.  Once we finish the prompt, students will continue acting out the play in class.  We will continue to be working on vocabulary words by doing two-column notes, and we will also be looking at common mechanics, usage, and grammar mistakes in their writing.
Science: (Mr. Marino) –  Students will continue working with Newtons 3 Law of Motion, we will have 1 lab demonstrating each Law to reinforce each one. Lab reports will be up on Aspen when they are completed. Additionally, I am accepting Lego donations for Robotics Club, so if any one you know has lego’s they no longer need and would like to donate them, it would be appreciated.

Spanish: (Señora Barkley)- Students will have their SER vs ESTAR Quiz on Tuesday next week. They will then begin learning about Direct Object Pronouns.
Spanish: (Ms. Mirabella) – Next week, students will review all Chapter 8 vocabulary, grammar, and culture in preparation for their Chapter 8 exam. The Chapter 8 exam will be on Thursday, March 19th for 8B. Extra help is available after school on Tuesday!
French: (Mme Abrams) – French students will be finishing their review of Lessons 17-20 and can expect a Unit Test during the week.

 Math: (Mrs. Wilkes) – Next week we will continue covering many topics including introductions to transformations, functions, exponents, systems, and scientific notation. We will also review some algebra topics such as slope.
Social Studies: (Mrs. Bova) – Next week, students will discover how the Catholic Church helped to unite Western Europe.  A quiz on Chapter 15 Section 1 will be given towards the end of the week.
Science: (Mr. Hickman) –  Next week, students will continue their study of forces with several
labs evaluating and analyzing gravity and friction.
ELA: (Mrs. Nelson-Boyd) –  On Monday and Tuesday students will be drafting the interview.  Interviews must be conducted by Monday.  Next week we will continue with the multicultural unit and focus on researching all the aspects of culture
