Science: (Mrs. Gorham) – Next week the students will finish the posters for the Open House Project. We continue to work on MCAS. (May 18th and 19th) Next week students will receive the last of four MCAS review packets.

Social Studies: (Mr. Nelson) – This week in social studies we began learning about the Renaissance and Italy’s thriving city-states. We also had a guest speaker who talked about the similarities and differences between the U.S. army’s interrogation tactics, and those of the Spanish Inquisition. Next week, we will continue chapter 17-1 and have a quiz on the material midweek.

Math: (Miss Mantia) – Students will present their business projects to classes on Monday.  Word problem flip cards are due on Tuesday.  Students received a rubric and viewed sample cards.  Each student needs to create their own word problem and answer key.  The word problem should result in an equation in y = mx + b form, an input-output table, and a graph.  Word problem flip cards count as a quiz grade.  The business projects and word problem flip cards will be displayed at Open House.  Students will also continue their work with systems of equations.  I encourage the students to take detailed notes because they will take an open-book, open-notes test on Systems after the unit.

Italian: (Mrs. Pescatore) – Students will begin Chapter 8, I Pasti (The Meals). They will learn some vocabulary pertaining to breakfast and lunch foods. There will be a quiz at the end of the week on the verb sapere (pages 186 – 189).

Spanish: (Ms. Mirabella) – Next week, students will take their Chapter 9 Test on Wednesday, 5/11. Following the test, students will begin preparing for their cumulative final exam in class and at home. The final exam will be on Thursday, 5/26. Extra help is available after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays before the final!

Spanish: (Sra. Abrams) – Spanish students can expect a quiz on the summer activity vocabulary in Palabras 1 in Chapter 9 (pages 258-9). quizlet.com/42993295

Spanish: (Señora Barkley) – Students should plan to have their Chapter 9 Vocabulary Quiz on Wednesday next week. Check the blog for links to Quizlet to help with review: http://senorabarkleyespanol.blogspot.com/2016/05/8th-grade-quizlet-links-for-chapter-9_2.html

Health: (Mrs. Fay) –  Students will be starting the harmful substance unit.  They will be introduced to drug categories and the following week will be working in groups on drug presentations.  

Health: (Ms. Eovine) –   Students will be finishing the group drug presentations.  All classes will be visiting the “Family Diversity” photo exhibit in the media center.  Students will use their ipads to answer questions about the exhibit.

Science: (Mr. Marino) –  Students have finished their projects at this point. We will continue on reviewing for MCAS. During the week students can expect to have homework and a few short quizzes to get them ready.

Social Studies: (Mrs. DiSipio) –   We will be studying how Italian city-states grew wealthy and used their riches to bring a rebirth of art and ideas to Europe.  Students should expect a quiz next week on Chapter 17, Section 1.  They should use their vocabulary and presentation notes to help them prepare.  

Math: (Mr. Peterson) – This week, students worked very hard on PARCC review, and they took the PARCC math test on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  Next week, we will begin chapter 10 (multiplying with polynomials and factoring polynomials).

ELA: (Mrs. Nelson-Boyd) – Next week students will be introduced to the novel Fahrenheit 451.  It is important that students keep up with the reading assignments so that they can participate in class activities and discussions.

Social Studies: (Mrs. Volpe) – Next week we will continue our studies on the causes and the effects of the Reformation. Students will understand how the reformers began a new Christian movement.

Math: (Mrs. Wilkes) – Students will study the concept of polynomials and how to add and subtract polynomials.  Students will also learn the FOIL method of multiplying binomials as well as multiplying any other combination of polynomials.

Science: (Mr. Hickman) –   Next week, students will complete the poster presentation for the team research projects that they designed and tested.  Following Open House, students will continue their review for the Science and Engineering Technology MCAS scheduled for May 18th and 19th.

Latin: (Mr. Finnigan) – Next week we will begin our review for the final exam with a review of Lessons 9-12.  We will also start reading an abridged version of Virgil’s Aeneid, the great Roman national epic, in English to complement our Latin readings based on episodes from the poem. These readings will form the core of the final exam, which will be given over two days on Thurs., 5/26 and Fri., 5/27.
