Grade 8 Newsletters 9/19/14

September 19, 2014

Math: (Ms. Mantia) –  Next week students we will finish sections 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5.  These sections involve order of operations, equations, inequalities, and translations.  Students will continue to model and solve real-world situations such as interest earned and discounts and tax applied.  There will be a quiz at the end of the week.

Social Studies: (Mrs. Volpe) – Next week we will be learning about Muslim ways of life. Students will also be learning about the valuable contributions Muslims made in the sciences and art.

Science: (Ms. Gorham) – This week we did experiments in our Physical Science Lab.  We worked with water, graduated cylinders, triple-beam balance and pipettes.  We learnt about volume measurement, mass measurement and water displacement.  On Friday, we took our first quiz of the year.  We will be learning about the nature of matter next week.

ELA: (Mr. Pearl) – Next week we will finish our short story unit. We will also finish our first grammar unit. We will have tests on each of those topics. Students should also be working on their Treasure essays and their book reports. See weekly assignment sheet for details.

 

Italian: (Mrs. Pescatore) – Students will be learning how the possessive adjectives agree in gender and number with the nouns that they modify. When ready they will have a quiz on the chart on page 101.

Spanish: (Sra. Abrams) –  Spanish students will be reviewing time as well as verb forms of regular and a few irregular verbs. Students can expect a quiz on verb forms towards the end of next week.

Spanish: (Ms. Mirabella) –  Next week, students will be reviewing basic vocabulary from 7th grade Spanish, such as months, days of the week, greetings & goodbyes, numbers, and time. They will have a quiz on these topics the following week, exact date TBA in class, Extra help will be available after school Tuesdays & Thursdays!

Latin: (Mr. Sullivan) – Students will continue translating the paragraph  on page 7; they will be quizzed on the vocabulary on Stage 13; and students will read and analyze the letter of Pliny the Younger to the consul Maximus.

Health: (Mrs. Fay) –  Students will be completing their plan to keep the United States healthy.  They are trying to establish health priorities using a few key statistics, and then brainstorming creative programs that would help them reach these health goals.

Math: (Mr. Peterson) –  This week, students worked on section 1.3 (order of operations), 1.4 (inequalities), and 1.5 (problem solving).  We will have a quiz on sections 1.3-1.5 on Monday.  Next week, we will work on 1.6 (tables and graphs) and 1.7 (functions).

Social Studies: (Mrs. DiSipio) – Students will continue studying the spread of the Islamic Empire into areas of Asia, Africa and Europe.  Students will be able to explain how early Arab leaders used preaching, conquest and trade to spread their faith.  Students should expect a quiz on Chapter 11, Section 2 next Thursday.

Science: (Mr. Marino) –  Students are working with the iPad’s to learn how to organize data. We are utilizing separate sheets within a spreadsheet to organize the metric conversions we were working with last week. In addition, they are refined their modeling skills for labs, and doing so using the triple-beam balances and materials from the lab stations.

ELA: (Mrs. Bergeron) – We will be having a unit exam on the short story unit Tuesday.  Study guides are available on our team blog as well as on our google classroom site.  We will continue working on our own short stories, as the completed rough draft is due on Thursday.  We will also continue our look at sentence structure in our grammar unit.

French: (Mme Abrams) –  French students will be continuing work in Lesson 15, making sentences negative. We will also be studying some useful adverbs, learning proper word order within sentences.

Health: (Mrs. Fay) –  Students will be completing their plan to keep the United States healthy.  They are trying to establish health priorities using a few key statistics, and then brainstorming creative programs that would help them reach these health goals.

Math: (Mrs. Wilkes) –  Next week students will look at a problem solving plan using models, translating verbal phrases into algebra, tables and graphs, as well as an introduction to functions.

Social Studies: (Mrs. Bova) – Next week, we will be concluding chapter 11 in class and starting a map on the Arabian Peninsula. There will be a quiz on section 3 on Wednesday.  Studying the vocabulary is the key to good grades on the quizzes!

Science: (Mr. Hickman) –  Next week students will begin their study of matter with several labs evaluating the qualitative and qualitative characteristics of solids.  Today’s quiz on the metric system will be returned on Monday.

ELA: (Mrs. Nelson-Boyd) – We will finish the short story unit in literature book next week and prepare for a test on all of the stories.  There will be a study guide and review questions to help students review for the test.  We will also finish up our first grammar unit and review for a test next week.  Classes will also be assigned the first independent reading assignment.

 

French: (Mme Pescatore) – French students will be continuing work in Lesson 15, making sentences negative. We will also be studying some useful adverbs, learning proper word order within sentences.
