September 3, 2015

Science: (Mrs. Gorham) –  Next week the students will review metric measurements. We will focus on Length, Volume and Mass. Students will also receive grades from their Science Pre-Test.

Math: (Ms. Mantia) – We are beginning the year with discussions on how math is relevant in the real world including examples from the stock market, real estate trends, and sports statistics.  We are also beginning with a brief review of fractions and decimals.  Next week we are beginning Chapter 1 which includes variable expressions, exponents, interest word problems, and rates word problems.

Social Studies: (Mr. Nelson) – This week in social studies we talked about the three major monotheistic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam). Next week, we will be beginning chapter 11-1 on the rise of Islam and start creating a social studies book cover.

ELA: (Mrs. Kotarakos) – Welcome to 8A Language Arts!  This week students completed their summer reading tests.  Next week, we will begin our first literature unit on short stories. Student have already received their first vocabulary words on literary elements.  There will be a quiz on these words next Friday.  In grammar, students will focus on subjects, predicates, and sentences.  Lastly, all students received a book report schedule for the entire year.  Book genres and due dates are included on this sheet as well as my expectations.  

Italian: (Mrs. Pescatore) – Students are reviewing the first half of chapter 4, La Famiglia: family member vocabulary (page 82), the verb “to have” (page 87) and body parts vocabulary (page 89). By the end of next week they will give a short oral presentation introducing to the class two family members, one male and one female, using a photo of each.

Spanish: (Ms. Mirabella) – Next week, students will continue to review question words and noun/adjective agreement in Spanish. They should expect a quiz by the end of the week. Please subscribe to my classroom blog at www.msmirabellaspanish.wordpress.com!

Spanish: (Mrs. Abrams) – Bienvenidos. Spanish students will be reviewing material from 7th grade. We will start with question words and adjective agreement and position. Students can expect a quiz on the eight question words and subject pronouns during the week.

Spanish: (Señora Barkley) – Students should be studying the first 3 pages of their review vocabulary packet. Also, parents and students should subscribe to the class blog: http://www.senorabarkleyespanol.blogspot.com

Health: (Mrs. Fay) –  Students will begin the unit on Public Health by identifying important health issues and ranking them according to their chosen criteria.  Students will then discuss how health issues might change, and what public health officials can do to promote beneficial change.

Math: (Mr. Peterson) –  This week, students reviewed some important topics from seventh grade.  Next week, we will begin chapter 1 in the textbook.  Some topics in chapter 1 include variables, exponents, and functions.  

Science: (Mr. Marino)- Welcome back! We will begin the first unit on the metric system. Students will be able to differentiate between which units to use when measuring distance, mass and volume. Student will be involved in lab work to experience how to use these measurements.

Social Studies: (Mrs. DiSipio) – Next week, we will begin our unit on Islam.  Students will be studying the emergence of Islam on the Arabian Peninsula and who the prophet of Islam is.  Students should expect vocabulary and map work throughout the week.  

ELA: (Mrs. Bergeron) – Next week, we will begin a literature unit on short stories. We will also begin grammar work in our grammar packet. Please see the weekly assignment sheet for details.

Math: (Mrs. Wilkes) 8C students have had a great start this year!  We are already reviewing concepts in Chapter 1 such as variables, variable expressions, finding simple interest using I=Prt, perimeter, and the distance formula.  We have also studied how to apply unit analysis when an expression is simplified.

Social Studies: (Mrs. Volpe)Newsletter Social Studies- 8A- Mrs. Volpe  We are off to a great start. The students are working diligently on their class assignments.  Next week we will be learning about Islamic Empires and how Islam spread throughout the Middle East.

Science: (Mr. Hickman)  Next week, students will be reviewing the metric system with several labs measuring length, mass and volume using various measurement devices.  Concepts of significant digits and the accuracy and precision of numbers will be applied in these measurements.  

ELA: (Mrs. Nelson-Boyd) –  Next week, we will begin a literature unit on short stories. We will also begin grammar unit on subjects, predicates, and sentences.  Students will have their first vocabulary quiz on the first ten literary elements.
