SOCIAL STUDIES: (Ms. Ellis A-13) Next week we will review our unit on climate and students will have their first “Tuiz” (looks like a test, counts like a quiz) in social studies. Students should use their review guide to help them study. Class notes, homework, and the book are all resources students should reference while studying. Our next unit will be culture. We will examine the 8 traits; daily life, social groups, language, history, religion, arts, economy, and government. This will be our final unit before moving on to our first continent study, South America! Together these introductory units form the building blocks to understanding the content of the remaining units.

Reading: (A-13) Students will continue to read Among the Hidden. We will continue to work on vocabulary and character development.

MATH: (Mrs. MacCurtain A-14) Over the next couple of weeks students will continue with Chapter 2, “Decimal Operations.” They will continue with decimal forms, comparing and ordering decimals and decimals on a number line.  There will be a quiz on these topics.  Students will then be learning about all decimal operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing) and, if there is time, there will be a quiz on these concepts.

Reading: (A-14) Students will continue reading Freak the Mighty and another five chapter quiz will be given. Students are really enjoying the story!

LANGUAGE ARTS: (Sullivan A-15) Final drafts of the “My Neighborhood” essay are due Monday, October 20th. Students received a rubric in class which will be used to grade these essays. During the next two weeks, we will focus on cause and resolution of a conflict in a story. We will be reading the short stories, The Porcupine and the Sky Mirrors and The Fly to assist in our discussion. We will also be learning about main verbs and helping verbs and their importance in a sentence.

Reading (A-15) Students continue to read the novel Holes. We have been using our iPads in class to review vocabulary that is used throughout the novel. Students are able to play vocabulary games and review definitions of new words in a fun and different way!

SCIENCE: (Mrs. Richardson D-103)  We continue to work on the parts of a lab report and testing products.   We will finish up the cup tests. They will be viewing the animation, “Science Court.”  This is a fun, interactive CD where the students take on the role as a courtside commentator.  The topic will be “Data and Statistics.”  Students will apply scientific inquiry and conduct an investigation.  A test on the scientific method will be given.

Reading: (D-103)  We will be finishing up the novel, Babe and Me.  Will Joe be able to return to the present?!  After this experience, will his relationship with his dad improve?  Many questions will be answered and discussed.

HEALTH: Ms. Eovine – Students will be sharing in a healthy eating day first class meeting of the week.  I will be making smoothies and students will contribute healthy snacks approved by the teacher.  Students will begin the violence prevention unit which uses the “Second Step” program.  The focus will be on defining the different types of conflict and ways to resolve them.
