SOCIAL STUDIES: (Ms. Ellis A-13) We have wrapped up our first unit on map skills! Students received a study guide yesterday for next Tuesday’s (9/23) quiz. Students can visit the class blog (http://6cgeography.wordpress.com) for online games for extra latitude and longitude practice. After the quiz students will be introduced to the 5 Themes of Geography, which are: location, place, region, movement, and human environment interaction. These themes, along with map skills, will help lay the groundwork for our future units on countries throughout the world. Following the 5 Themes will be landforms and climate.

Reading: (A-13) Students will continue to read Among the Hidden. We will focus on plot development and connections to the real world.

MATH: (Mrs. MacCurtain A-14) It was nice to meet so many of you at Open House last night.  As a reminder, our homework will be posted nightly on our 6C blog (http://team6cmsms.wordpress.com). Students have started in the textbook “McDougal Littell – Course 2” with Chapter 1, “Number Sense, Patterns and Algebraic Thinking.” The have learned about Variables (1.2) and Exponents (1.3) and will continue with Order of Operations (1.4).  A quiz will be given on these three sections of Chapter 1.  They will then be learning about simple Equations (1.5) and Area and Perimeter (1.6). Students should continue practicing their multiplication facts at home to become more fluent!

Reading: (A-14) Students will continue reading “Freak The Mighty.” Another five chapter quiz will be given and we will continue to work on fluency and comprehension.

LANGUAGE ARTS: (Mrs. Sullivan A-15) Students had a quiz today on the short stories, All Stories are Anansi’s and The End of the Word. Included on the quiz were the vocabulary words we have been working with for the past two weeks. Students received a book report schedule in class. Students will be expected to read four books from different genres through-out the school year. A copy of the book report schedule can be found on my blog. We will continue our discussion of sentence types and fragments. Students will learn how to write a good paragraph, with a strong topic sentence and details. We will be discussing the writing process.

Reading (A-15) Students have completed research on topics that appear in the story Holes. Students will read the novel in class.

SCIENCE: (Mrs. Richardson D-103) The students have had their first quiz on observations today!  Next week we will learn more about the parts of a lab report (title, purpose, hypothesis, materials, procedure, data, conclusion, analysis and application).  Your child will engage in some fun labs such as the Pepsi Challenge, the Lollipop Lab, and ultimately be able to write their own lab report when testing products through Consumer Reports.  We are sensitive to allergies and students may opt to only participate in the written portion of the lab.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Reading: (D-103)  Mrs. Gover has been working with the students on researching (utilizing the ipads) and building background knowledge to align with the novel Babe and Me.  The students have been working in partners and reflecting on what they’ve read.

HEALTH: Ms. Eovine Students will be working with officer cross starting next week using the G.R.E.A.T. curriculum.  The focus this week will be on positive communication and learning about helping within our communities.
